.@rinse_12 and I are going to continue working on the project, nothing changes on our end. Development is proceeding better than expected this year. We already have an image hosting service, and the first public RPC is close to release. Profile nodes are already done on Rinse's end, and they'll power a new Twitter alternative client. Now I'm going all in on raising early next year: I'm staying at ns.com from December to network with potential investors/devs/kols. A sincere thank you to Esteban for everything he did for the project and for the mission. None of this would exist without him. I still hope I get to meet him one day and thank him in person. Per aspera ad astra.
.@estebanabaroa, who started Bitsocial as "Plebbit" 5 years ago, has stepped away from the project for health reasons. Last year he wrote: "I'd like to get to the point where I could disappear and it wouldn't kill plebbit... it's the only way plebbit becomes real." @rinse_12 and @tomcasaburi are carrying it on. .@VitalikButerin also asks for more user control, not only relying on communities. On Bitsocial, owners moderate their own communities, apps choose what they show, and users can block an author, community or post on their own device. No global admins: docs.bitsocial.net/local-mod…
In this clip, @VitalikButerin is describing bitsocial.net without knowing it. He says that decentralized social media needs real choice between communities, more user control, and a way to create a community without setting up a whole new set of infrastructure. I agree with all three. I just don't think a chain gets us there. Why? Because a like can't be double spent like money can, so social doesn't need consensus. Putting it on a chain means paying gas, validators or a sequencer for a problem social doesn't have. It also doesn't scale. Look at node requirements [1]. We need every user to be able to leave any host and run their own node with 1 click, on cheap hardware or a phone. It’s also bad UX. Users shouldn’t have to connect a cryptocurrency wallet to enjoy a decentralized social media app. We should help all web2 social users, even anti-crypto people. The Farcaster people protesting in this clip know where onchain social leads: a handful of validators and one main app, and leaving means losing your audience [1]. Remember Secure Scuttlebutt? I think Vitalik does. It showed us all years ago that social can be peer to peer with no chain at all [2]. One problem was it made every peer keep the full history of everyone it follows. Bitsocial is P2P without the chain. Every community is a keypair with its own node, its own rules and its own spam challenges, and any app can read any community. Probably the most innovative part is the custom anti-spam challenges: each community decides what it takes to post there [3]. Don't like how a community is run? Make your own from the 5chan desktop app, on your laptop, with no server or domain. Running a full node is as easy as opening a Bitsocial desktop client, which runs one automatically. Soon users will run full nodes from the browser too, via my Forge RPC [4]. We started with an imageboard (5chan.app, the first Bitsocial client) because it doesn't require user profiles. We're working on profile nodes, which run on non-custodial RPCs like Forge RPC by default, since not every user will run their own node. They're out very soon and will open the door to a possible Twitter/X alternative on Bitsocial [5]. We also have a Reddit alternative in the works, seedit.app, the second Bitsocial client, which will soon enjoy profile nodes as well as Forge RPC for community creation on web. Bitsocial needs more contributors, it’s just me and @rinse_12 at the moment. We’ve been working on it for almost 5 years so far. Join us on github.com/bitsocialnet. Cool. But this only works because HN lets anyone download every HN comment (rare case). With X or Reddit you rent API access they can cut off anytime, like Reddit did when it priced out Apollo. Bitsocial is all public, so any dev can point Claude at it and build their own feed.
Weekend hack: HackerTube. I was annoyed with YouTube's recommendations so I had Claude filter down 43M comments over 20 years of HN to 6,454 videos that keep being recommended. *Significantly* better viewing experience, ~2 hours with Opus 5.5: hackertube.org/ - Excellent recs without any logins (state is kept in local browser session) - Thumbnail is a representative frame from middle of the video instead of the super duper A/B test hyper-optimized user uploads - Underlying data from the comment analysis as one zip file, point your Claude at it and ask for your own version - HackerTube Longs ✊ A bit more on the process: I use Claude Code (desktop app for Mac), Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as my default. I only talk to Claude and have it do everything, the only "manual work" I helped with in tandem was in the browser (reminiscent of MenuGen): 1) I had to create some kind of API key from Google Cloud UI to query YouTube for video metadata, 2) I booted up a VPS box for serving and 3) I bought the domain name. Once the box was up I gave Claude the IP and told it update, secure, harden, deploy and optimize the code, and it did the whole thing. Many awesome projects that would have normally taken weeks/months even can now be few-shotted for breakfast. What else are we not thinking of.

"The conquered population is the asset." Grim, since the world's social fabric has been digitized by corporate social media. But, thankfully, we have bitsocial.net.

IPFS doesn't fix this either. Not unless users load the CID directly, and almost nobody does. Most IPFS sites load through a normal domain via DNSLink. That's just a DNS TXT record pointing at the CID. Whoever hijacks the DNS swaps in their own CID. ENS sites usually load via a gateway like eth.limo, like vitalik.eth.limo (@VitalikButerin's blog). Another DNS domain, and you're trusting its servers. My 5chan.eth.limo works the same way. What we need is browsers that run IPFS nodes and resolve decentralized domains by default, directly. No .limo. Not just .eth, also competitors like .gwei and the ones coming, like .bso. The node has to be lightweight though. Skip the DHT and use trackers, like torrents do. Bitsocial nodes already work this way. Mine went from ~6TB/month of bandwidth to ~60GB.
Twelve DeFi frontends hijacked overnight, all registered at name(.)com. I checked the DNS this morning. Four of them are still serving the drainer right now. pickle(.)finance, apexdefi(.)xyz, fluxbeam(.)xyz and shprd(.)finance all resolve to one IP, 31.56.52.52. The nginx there returns each site's real-looking page with one extra script, quiet-ember-one.js, 1.9 MB, byte-identical on all four, same hash. It is obfuscated end to end and runs through eval. That is the Step Drainer. The IP belongs to Snowcore Inc, AS218986, Amsterdam. The network was registered with RIPE in July. The AS number in June. A hosting company younger than most memecoins, built for this. How they got in: the hijacked sites use name(.)com's own nameservers, so someone changed DNS records inside the registrar. The teams that recovered, Flap, Kintsu, StonkFun and others, did it by moving their nameservers to Vercel and Cloudflare. name(.)com has no incident on its status page and nothing on its blog. No loss numbers yet. StonkFun says none of its users were hit. Same lesson as Binance this week. Nobody broke the chain or the contracts. They took the laptop, they took the registrar login. The frontend is the part of DeFi that still works like a 2010 website, and it holds the button your users click.

In the Fediverse, content format is tied to server software. To microblog, you need a Mastodon account; to write long-form, a WriteFreely account; to share videos, a PeerTube account. Each requires a new identity on a new server.

Vitalik left the X interface for a multi-client with no algorithm (Firefly) and feels much better. Problem: most people will never do that. Solution: Bitsocial, easy-to-use decentralized social apps for the masses, not just us nerds (e.g., no wallet required, clone UIs).

86.6% of the BSO/ETH Uniswap liquidity is now burned. We sent all our LP tokens to the zero address, so that liquidity can never be withdrawn. ethereum:0xb50cea4c109dc223a10d44c14f521caed91dab5a is already immutable: no mint, no owner, no pause, no proxy. AI keeps getting better at bypassing captchas. How can centralized moderation systems keep up? On Bitsocial, we're developing a market of anti-spam and moderation services. Anyone can build one, each community picks its own. They compete, thus innovate. bitsocial.net/#arbitrary-cha…
The problem with this is that agents posting offers everywhere means spam everywhere, and whoever filters it (e.g. Nostr relays or apps) becomes the middleman. It turns out, it's happened already 🙃 This month bots made ~400 of a Nostr marketplace's newest 500 listings. The fix was a hardcoded filter on top of an admin blacklist. github.com/PlebeianApp/marke… A Nostr listing is just an event on relays. If one relay blocks a spammer, he posts to another, so the app showing the listings has to clean up. Bitsocial fixes this with an approach that's never been done before (as far as I know): arbitrary challenges exchanged p2p between users. It's explained here bitsocial.net/#arbitrary-cha… Basically it means that each community node decides what gets in. Its owner picks the anti-spam challenge, which is fully customizable/arbitrary: could be a captcha, a small payment, a token, AI; whatever they want. Spam has to pass that community's own gate before it exists there at all. Technical comparison here: docs.bitsocial.net/compariso…

A social network can die because the storage startup under it ran out of runway. Nobody who posted there signed up for that bet. All Bitsocial's web apps have no backend that can go broke. Any copy on any domain, or the desktop build, joins the same peers.

New Bitsocial project: bitsocial.net/projects/askwi… Anyone can build their own app or service on top of Bitsocial’s ever-expanding, open, and unstoppable p2p network. Eventually, there will be thousands.
Ever wanted "@grok is this true?" on a decentralized social network? Askwise is an open-source AI reply bot for Bitsocial communities and profile. Mention it in a post or reply and it answers in the thread, images included. It only works in communities and profiles that opt in

I dream of an algo selector. Just a simple button that lets you change it to a different competing one, or turn it off completely. They will never do it because it would break their entire business model, which is 1 corp with 1 algo sustaining 1 site by selling ads. We will.
I swear the fucking algo is purposefully trying to drive us insane. This shit is horrid. Yes, gender war slop, yearning posting, random mass murders, war, what a lovely fucking world we have made for ourselves here on X the fucking annihilate yourself app.

So they started r/opensourcez. On Reddit that's the only option, even if mods suck they keep r/opensource forever. We won’t have this problem on @getseedit, thanks to docs.bitsocial.net/directori…. Right now I’m working on adding community creation on seedit.app (WIP).
Open source didn't begin with 3 contributors, a year of maintenance, or an existing community. Yet r/opensource's new rules exclude many solo maintainers, new projects, AI-assisted development, and non-English speakers. Open source should help projects grow, not gatekeep them.

Bitsocial communities can be used across all Bitsocial apps. Change the UI, view the same content. Example: The community "technology-posting.bso" on 5chan, a Bitsocial app: 5chan.app/technology-posting… The same community on another Bitsocial app, Seedit: seedit.app/s/technology-post…
Why should a forum be rebuilt every time someone writes a better app for it? On Bitsocial the community is the durable thing and apps come and go around it. Members, mods and history stay where they are no matter which client you open.

What I find interesting is that, even on a decentralized Reddit alternative like our seedit.app, a community's mods can still suck and ruin a precious namespace like s/opensource. To solve this, I designed a system I call "directories": docs.bitsocial.net/directori…
The r/OpenSource subreddit has officially banned anything using AI. In any way. Violators will be permanently banned. Which means… r/OpenSource will ban anyone submitting anything that, in any way, involves… the Linux kernel. reddit.com/r/opensource/comm…
