I’ve been warning the federal government about the security risks of importing Chinese-made electric vehicles for months. Leading European intelligence agencies are now ringing the alarm bells. It’s time for the federal government to take these concerns seriously.
If you were one of the people that laughed at Doug Ford calling them Chinese spy cars, you might want to think again. Don't take Ford's word for it, listen to the Dutch, the Brits, the Germans and Norwegians. torontosun.com/opinion/colum…

Tariff costs on the auto industry are mounting. The result: production⬇️, exports⬇️, prices⬆️, and a less competitive North American industry. Restoring USMCA tariff-free trade would strengthen the industry across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. fortune.com/2026/09/25/canad…

BC Government requires 26% of new vehicle sales to be zero-emission in 2026, yet BC Hydro’s own fleet is just 2.9% fully-electric. It operates 9× as many regular hybrids as EVs, but hybrids don't count under BC's regs even though many are built in Canada. No EVs are made here.🤷‍♂️

Tariffs are a self-inflected economic wound. U.S. built vehicles accounted for 28% of Canadian new-vehicle sales in the first half of 2026, down from 35% in the same period of 2025.
U.S.-built vehicles are losing ground fast in Canada. Their share of new-vehicle sales fell to 28.4% in the first half of 2026 from 35.4% a year earlier as tariffs pushed automakers toward Mexico, Japan and elsewhere. Mexico: 22.2% Japan: 16.6% autonews.com/retail/anc-tari…

“The tariff pain hits Michigan’s biggest industry the hardest. Our auto sector is deeply integrated with Canada’s, accounting for 1 in 5 private-sector jobs in the state and making the Detroit-Windsor border crossing the busiest in North America.” wsj.com/opinion/gov-gretchen…

Despite a growing slate of all-electric models available across Canada, softening EV transaction prices and the federal government bringing back its up to $5K incentive, Canada’s EV market is still struggling to regain its footing. @AutoNewsCanada autonews.com/ev/anc-evap-reb…

This should serve as a cautionary tale for Canada. Opening the door to dumped Chinese vehicles can have disastrous consequences for domestic auto manufacturing.

Join me on September 29 for a timely discussion on the risks posed by Chinese EVs and what they mean for Canada’s auto industry.
Chinese electric vehicles may offer lower prices, but what are the hidden national security costs? Join the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and Prosperity, Not Poverty (@prosperNpoverty) online September 29 at 3:30 p.m. ET for a panel discussion on the security risks posed by Chinese EVs. The discussion will examine data harvesting, remote surveillance, critical infrastructure, the impact on Canada’s auto industry and North American trade, and why allied militaries are restricting these vehicles from sensitive installations. Featuring: • Christopher Coates, Director of Foreign Policy, National Defence and National Security, MLI • Brian Kingston (@bkingston), President and CEO, Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association • Margaret McCuaig-Johnston (@M_Johnston1), Senior Fellow, Institute for Science, Society and Policy • Prof. Brenda Shaffer (@ProfBShaffer), Research Faculty, U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and Contributor, Prosperity, Not Poverty Register here: eventbrite.ca/e/cheap-cars-h… @cvma_ca
