There have been some people interviewed saying that #AndesVirus can only spread via extended close contact such as sleeping in the same bed as someone. This is not the case. The NEJM outbreak definitively shows a counterexample to this with at least 3 individuals w/ substantial onward spread to multiple others in crowded social settings. Authors implicate both droplet and aerosol transmission here directly in the paper. I suspect it is short-range and the case needs to be shedding substantially.
2/ The index case in this outbreak attended a birthday party for about 90 minutes and was symptomatic at the time. Five people that were seated close to this person ended up infected. They describe that patient number two was the likely source of six additional infections "because of his active social life". Patient number nine in that image was the spouse of patient number two, and assumption is that she infected 10 people who attended the funeral. In the paper, they call patients 1, 2 and 9 "superspreaders". This seems to be primarily driven by contact patterns (being at a birthday party or at the wake/funeral while contagious).

Hantavirus IS airborne. It is not as contagious as COVID or the flu, but more contagious than what news is telling us. It’s spreading easier than expected and this strain can be contracted from human-human contact. People need to get their facts right about #hantavirus.
