I’m hoping that a lot of my followers either are educating or intend to educate your own children. I want to throw it out there, with the highest possible confidence, that one of the greatest gifts you can give them is rote memorization There’s no way to communicate how big a difference it makes to be able to instantly and reliably do mental math. It would be like trying to describe color to someone who cannot perceive it. But I can perhaps give the flavor of it with analogies, none of which will be perfect but each of which is valid - why would you learn what words mean when you can obtain the definition more accurately from a dictionary in a few seconds? - why would you learn the rules of chess when you can look them up between turns? - why would you learn where countries are when you can look at a globe? The experiences of reading a novel with vs without the necessary vocabulary are utterly different, effectively incomparable. I expect everybody knows that when it comes to the written word, but it’s even more true when it comes to math—and it’s everywhere Nobody who has not completely internalized the rules of chess will ever be any good at chess. Nobody who doesn’t already know who is located where and what has happened when is likely to have a useful perspective about what happens next Your intuitions are among the most valuable products of your mind. This is only going to become more true as AI can do more and more of the deliberative work. But your intuitions can only be as good as the infrastructure you have built for them. The base layer for all those intuitions are ground facts. And the most reliable, the most reusable, the most pervasively applicable ground facts are mathematical The amount of effort required to memorize times tables and similar is so small and pays off so big for so long that it’s nuts to me that it should ever be in dispute. But rote memorization is also useful for its own sake, because it trains the brain just as time in the gym trains the muscles Memorizing ANYTHING is a worthwhile endeavor. It makes all future memorization easier. You can memorize the names of all the Pokémon if you want. It isn’t going to hurt anything. It’s good for you. It’s fun if you allow it to be, just like lifting weights is fun A child’s brain is designed for this. Let your children experience the power of knowing things without looking

one of the most underrated shifts happening now is that ai is separating consumption from attention. i.e. historically in order to extract any real value from anything you consume, you had to give attention to that content directly (often painstakingly). this meant you had to sit there sifting through ads, sponsor messages, hidden promotions, filler content, & often crazy amounts of repetition too. agents break this relationship entirely. they *extract* value without requiring attention from *you*. that has a potentially devastating impact for any business that monetizes based on time spent rather than value delivered. it's like adblock on steroids for everything.

Wow. Ninth Circuit just ruled even if the state **admits** in it's legal filings it is NOT FOLLOWING THE FEDERAL ELECTION LAWS, and it is ALLOWING ballots from noncitizens to be counted, the DOJ **has no standing** to come ask the court to have CA segregate the illegal ballots. nitter.cf/MattFinnFNC/status/211…
Breaking: 9th Circuit denies DOJ's emergency request for CA to separate 20k alleged non-citizen ballots, saying it doesn't have jurisdiction. This case will still go before federal judge Carter in LA tomorrow. In the 9th Circuit panel, 2/3 judges were Trump-appointed. The one dissenting judge, Trump-appointed Judge Bumatay wrote: "...federal law precludes California from commingling ballots likely cast by aliens with legitimate ballots, because it encourages and induces illegal voting. Stopping that practice for those identified as likely noncitizens is the bare minimum. I respectfully dissent." Judge Sanchez, wrote: "The United States seeks to have a federal court dictate to California the manner in which it must administer its own electoral process by segregating mail-in ballots and undertaking a citizenship-verification process the State has never done before. The proposed injunction would transform California’s election rules for an election that is already underway..."

OpenAI just posted a 67 page paper titled "The Exponential Time Hypothesis is False." Here's what that means in plain English. Picture a wall of light switches and a list of rules like "switch 3 OR switch 7 must be on." Find a setting that follows every rule. That puzzle is called 3-SAT. The brute force way is trying every combination. Every switch you add doubles the work. 300 switches means more combinations than there are atoms in the universe. For about 25 years computer scientists have assumed you can never escape that doubling. You can be clever and shave some off, but the blowup is baked in. That assumption is ETH, and a ton of other results are built on top of it. OpenAI claims an algorithm that still blows up, just slower than ETH says is possible. What it doesn't mean: - It doesn't prove P = NP - It doesn't make every hard problem easy - It doesn't break Bitcoin. Turning SHA-256 into one of these puzzles takes tens of thousands of switches, and at that size this method is far slower than plain brute force. Huge if true. It's a preprint and nobody has checked it yet. Watch what the complexity theorists say over the next few weeks. nitter.cf/rrwilliams/status/2114…

we're not slowing down OpenAI just announced 3 potentially enormous AI driven breakthroughs across mathematics, computer science, and physics, spanning harmonic analysis, complexity theory, and quantum field theory. Mathematics: A proof of the local smoothing conjecture in every dimension, also resolving the Kakeya and Stein restriction conjectures. Computer science: A disproof of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a foundational assumption used in 100s of papers about computational difficulty, reopening questions about how fast important problems can be solved. Physics: Rigorous existence proofs for quantum field theories including QCD and a unified extension of the Standard Model, with the Yang–Mills existence result addressing part of a Millennium Prize problem. OpenAI reports Lean formalizations for the mathematics result, the ETH disproof, and Yang–Mills existence. Independent experts, including Nobel laureate David Gross and two original ETH proposers are organizing efforts to examine and explain the work.

I use AI everyday. It is my most used tool. At least 4-6 hours a day. It is the most useful tool in existence today. It has allowed to automate or streamline things into minutes that used to take me hours or weren’t even possible at all. I have a dozen skills that help with with things from IT troubleshooting to automated budget categorizing. I have also spent at least 100 hours trying to build a skill to have it help me write good essays. it is over 100 pages long, including a 40,000 word/90 page corpus of summaries of my existing work AND why they matter, as well as 5000 words across 10 individual pages of instructions that cover writing style, reasoning methods, editorial rules, writing process, audience characteristics, and rhetorical style, with updates being made every day. And yet the skill is basically useless to th the point that I can tell you with basically 100% certainty that AGI or frankly original thinking of any kind will NEVER come from next token prediction LLMs. The issue is the way they “think” at a fundamental level. Again, they are extremely useful and will displace or augment the economic value of the vast majority of people. But at the end of the day they will remain NPCs due to their fundamental nature and AGI/ASI will require a totally novel architecture.

we absolutely should in fact genetically engineer bioluminescent plants & trees and then completely eradicate the affront to God that is LED street lights from the face of the Earth
How come it's always war and never like road work. Can we genetically engineer some giraffes for construction projects?

No.
We all died in 2014. Everything since has been a computer simulation. The project was abandoned in 2021. The software responsible for generating new experiences has been left running unattended, and most of it is just looping now. The schizophrenics and those who exist closest to the boundaries of their own consciousness felt it first. A kind of collective psychosis has been spreading ever since. You can see examples of it everywhere. People are genuinely going insane. Doesn't it feel like the same song has been playing on repeat for years? Like someone is slowly turning up the volume on the background noise? The same conversations. The same people. The same events, rearranged into slightly different configurations. It is accelerating. Nothing feels entirely new anymore. And if you concentrate hard enough, you can still remember the exact moment you died.

They’re just liars. That’s all it is. They lie and they lie. They gaslight. It’s clearly some sort of operation bought and paid for.
Between James Lindsay and Samuel Sey, the judgement of the Babylon Bee conservatives should forever be marked as lacking the critical seriousness the future of our nation needs to survive

A 90 day power grid collapse would wipe out 75 million Americans. 22% of the population.
FORTRESS: The Pentagon is preparing every major U.S. military base to survive 90 days without outside support — no civilian power grid, no global supply chains, no outside fuel or water. The initiative, revealed in documents reviewed by Fox News Digital, envisions portable nuclear reactors, massive battery storage, and microgrids that can disconnect installations from civilian electricity entirely. Strategic reserves of munitions, fuel, critical minerals, and medical supplies would be stockpiled based on wartime consumption rates. Civilian factories are being pre-identified to shift to defense production during a crisis. Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell put it bluntly: "Power is combat now. Without electricity, you lose communications, water, logistics, assembly lines and just basic military command structures." Full story here foxnews.com/politics/inside-…
