This spells out why @meredithmartin and I feel lucky every day that we work with @MikePMoffatt.
The more politicians listen to his expert advice, the faster we'll get out of the housing crisis.

Here's the full interview with @henrygrabar & @carastern, where they explain how we ended up in a world with at least three parking spaces for every car, and how cities make more money from parking fines than from people paying for parking.

When people talk about what's more important, housing for cars or housing for people, that's not an abstract trade-off. It's a very real one. @henrygrabar & @carastern discuss his excellent book, Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World.
I really hope there's some accountability on this front. Students need to know that Ford's government knew about the fraud, and instead of stopping it, used it as an excuse to cut their OSAP funds.

After letting a few private career colleges rip off the OSAP system with impunity, the Ford govt used the scam as an excuse to cut OSAP grants for all students, accusing them of wasting money on “basket weaving courses” & “fancy watches & cologne” thestar.com/opinion/contribu… #onpoli

💯 Make some noise #students & #parents of impacted students. Call #DougFord & his govt out. Elections only happen every few years, but protests give #taxpayers an ongoing mechanism to express grievances & hold politicians accountable between election cycles.
#OSAP #scandal 🏫🧑🎓
When I see these plans, I remember how often those single family homeowners cite lack of privacy as a reason to protest development since people in the buildings can see into their backyards.
But you can see just how much privacy those in those dense high-rises will get.
The Ford government knew there was a scam going on with OSAP at a handful of career colleges. Instead of stopping it, they cut funds to all students. Now they've frozen OSAP for private career colleges that had nothing to do with the fraud.
The knew it. They chose not to act.
In today's episode of the Missing Middle Podcast, I unpack the scandal with @AlexUsherHESA. Watch it now on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts: youtube.com/watch?v=y_Fd9lWL…

Replying to @ABDanielleSmith
Your poster example is within walking distance of a new train station. How are we supposed to build transit oriented development if we can’t build a townhouse within 600 metres of a train?

This is such revisionist nonsense. Back when I was at the federal cabinet retreat pleading with them to get the international student situation under control (and getting called a racist for my efforts), Alberta was in the media asking for the population to grow *faster*.
The Prime Minister and I have found common ground on many things over the last 18 months. However, it appears that he has yet to fully understand just how damaging the open-border policies of his predecessor were. Those policies caused Canada’s cost of living to skyrocket, overwhelmed our social services, and made homes and jobs unattainable for thousands of young Canadians.
That’s why I’m encouraging Albertans to vote ‘yes to the rest’ to give our government a strong mandate to take more control over our immigration system, so that we can prioritize economic migrants, put Albertans first for jobs, and ensure Albertans’ social services are sustainable. We’re also asking for a strong mandate to work with willing provinces to reform the courts, abolish the senate, and protect provincial jurisdiction.
I look forward to hearing from Albertans on October 19th.
Great reporting here on how the civil servants tried to show evidence on bike lane impact to @fordnation and @PrabSarkaria, who were determined to ignore all facts and data.

I wish we could see the responses but hey, this government hates transparency and exempted themselves from freedom of information requests so that's not happening.
Good on @TorontoStar for highlighting how is impacting their reporting here.

Why Has Doug Ford BLOCKED New Property Tax Assessment In Ontario For 10 YEARS?
Doesn't everyone in Ontario deserve an answer?
No update since 2016
Because Hundreds of MPAC workers keep working & getting PAID on the Taxpayers dime & the reports are ready
Total Fuckery

A costly property tax reckoning is due for Ontario homeowners, writes Randall Denley.
The property value assessments that municipal taxes are based on are wildly outdated and Premier Doug Ford has failed to come to grips with the problem nationalpost.com/opinion/ran…

Calling on @MayorOliviaChow and @BradMBradford to seriously look at doing this and working with waymo and the province. I see no good reason for anyone to oppose this as it would leave us with funding for faster Transit, waymo, and reduce congestion pressure.
Cara Stern retweeted
With Waymo coming to Toronto now is the moment to talk congestion pricing. With a digital service like this you can do it without any cameras and charge a nominal fee for people entering the downtown core at certain times of day.

Ahem.
For those who may be unaware, Montreal is a cold *winter* city. Colder and snowier than Toronto.
And it now ranks 2nd among the world’s best cycling cities.
So don't even.

I am wondering why all we are getting are sternly worded statements from @oliviachow.
Is she working on some deal to save the rest of the lanes and just willing to sacrifice these ones? Or does she just have no fight in her for safer infrastructure?
These people are pushing back in the way that I would like to have seen the mayor and council respond to @fordnation's outrageous incursion on municipal jurisdiction (which is not, btw, just a figment of the founders' imaginations...)
If you want to know why bike lanes trigger so much rage, I recommend this interview I did with Tom Babin of the YouTube channel Shifter.

Is it too much to ask for publishers of articles advocating for cycling routes on secondary roads in Toronto to require their authors to submit a proposed alternative?
@RDiManno, is this the sort of secondary route you're thinking as an alternative to the Yonge Street lanes?
