The Army and Air Force have both opened cyberattack investigations after freezers failed simultaneously across at least six U.S. military bases. Fort Irwin, F.E. Warren, Fort Huachuca, Naval Station Newport, Columbus Air Force Base, and Travis Air Force Base all reported refrigeration failures around the same time. Freezers entered defrost mode overnight, food had to be thrown out, and commissary cold sections were shut down. The Pentagon initially described it as a “possible refrigeration disruption.” The New York Post is now reporting officials are treating it as a suspected cyberattack. Three federal agencies are investigating, the Army Criminal Investigation Division’s Cyber Field Office, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and the Defense Criminal Investigative Agency. No cause has been confirmed and no suspect has been named. Investigators haven’t ruled out equipment failure, but the simultaneous nature of the outages across multiple installations is what prompted the cyberattack investigation.
