A new report by the National Alliance for Climate and Ecological Justice (NACEJ) @napmindia and @cfa_ind exposes the staggering climate cost of Delhi’s four waste-to-energy incinerators. The findings are alarming:
* Electricity generated carries 3.4 kg of fossil-origin CO₂ per kWh; 4.7 times the Indian grid average.
* 7.35 lakh tonnes of plastic were burnt by the four plants in 2023 alone.
* An estimated 2.1 million tonnes of fossil origin CO₂ released from plastic combustion.
* Despite this enormous carbon burden, the plants supply less than 1.5% of Delhi’s electricity demand. And there is a deeper contradiction; India's EPR framework allows incinerators to earn plastic waste processing credits for burning plastic, creating an incentive to burn rather than prevent, reuse or recycle it. As Haryana now pushes massive WTE expansion, including a proposed 2,000-tonne-per-day Gurugram cluster, Delhi's experience must serve as a warning. How can one waste crisis be solved by creating another; polluting our air, destroying recoverable resources, undermining recycling & threatening waste workers' livelihoods? 🌍𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐒? Is BRICS the voice of the Global South, or does it represent the ambitions of emerging global powers? The bloc emerged with promises of a fairer world order and greater representation in global institutions. Yet, its relationship with global capitalism raises difficult questions about how far it is willing to go in challenging the existing system. At the Opening Plenary of the People’s BRICS Summit , held in New Delhi on 21–22 August 2026, @chenoyamc examines the contradictions shaping BRICS, its vision of a multipolar world, and its relationship with the wider Global South. ▶️ 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨: youtu.be/xzBmy-t-iS0 #BRICS #peoplesbrics #GlobalSouth #MultipolarWorld #EconomicJustice

The tightening noose of household debt is a phenomenon that is entrenched across South and Southeast Asia today. With @focussputh, @DevEconNetwork and @sacdweb we heard case studies and conditions in Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka and so on. We heard from garment workers, farmers, fisherfolks and sex workers which showed how entrenched the debt crisis is with largely similar patterns: consumption-based loans, high and predatory interest rates, poor recovery practices, the spread of digital lending, multiple and risky borrowing, low financial literacy, mental stress and suicides, and an overlap with climate vulnerability. @cfa_ind presented the experiences and learnings from India and highlighted the overlaps and the possibility of sharing learnings and experiences. We heard how the prescriptions of #IMF and #WorldBank continue to put constraints on the fiscal space available to the global south while leaving millions in debt.

A humanitarian crisis unfolds as thousands face displacement. More than 7,000 tribal families are reportedly on the verge of displacement due to the project. The Water Satyagraha and “Chita Movement” protests by tribal communities in Chhatarpur and Panna continue, with protesters demanding fair compensation, land in exchange for their lost land, and transparent rehabilitation. The project is expected to submerge or displace people from around 21 to 24 villages, either fully or partially. The Gond and Kol tribal communities, who have lived in the region for centuries, allege that the administration failed to obtain proper consent from the Gram Sabhas, as required under applicable provisions of the PESA Act and the Forest Rights Act (FRA).

“Give us justice or kill us!” Why are tribal women and farmers lying on a symbolic funeral pyre amid the river waters, raising this slogan? They are demanding fair compensation and dignified rehabilitation, while fighting to protect their rights to water, forests, and land. Amit Bhatnagar ji’s fast may have ended following written assurances from the administration, but the people remain vigilant. Their resolve will not weaken until every displaced family receives dignified rehabilitation and justice in this mega-project, whose cost was approved at ₹44,605 crore in 2021 and is now reportedly estimated at approximately ₹65,120 crore.

No words. The @MoEFCC’s empowered committee has recommended dumping 650 million litres per day of treated industrial wastewater from Surat’s chemical and textile hub into the #GulfOfKhambhat—a highly sensitive, biodiverse #estuarine ecosystem home to #mangroves, mudskippers & and migratory shorebirds. The irony of the #environment ministry sanctioning deep-sea dumping that threatens marine life and local fisherfolk livelihoods. #SaveGulfOfKhambhat #MarineEcology #Gujarat

Calvin is spot on. It needs "People like us" to sustain accountability & transperancy. To ask the bank why they put money on the big dam. To ask the govt why the spending on highways shoots up faster than on schools. To point out why investing in waste to energy is such a waste (of time and money). To ask why the bank's spreadsheet looks great, but the poor are going further in debt. We count on your solidarity and support to continue. You can pledge ₹500/month and join a community of 1000 #Citizens4CFA and share this with your friends to expand the community. Donate Now: cenfa.org/donate-now/ Donate, and share with friends. A thousand strong community who care about accountability is all we need.
