@chucktodd: How do you keep faith with some organized religion, given the role organized religion has played in keeping women as second class citizens? @AshleyJudd: You know, I love that question. And when I started hanging out with radical nuns in Central America in the 1990s, I learned a lot from them. And it is somehow discerning what is the gospel and what is institution and what is power. And some people choose to stay within an institution that they have inherited and critique it and make it better. And that's a fungible living organism that you have confidence can improve through human endeavor and aspiration. Or you can choose to leave it and be like Mary Daly, the great radical feminist who wouldn't even speak English because she said it was so baked through with patriarchy. She couldn't find a fucking word in our language that didn't reek of male supremacy. And I'm like, come on, Mary, I love to read your book, you know? And I like being in both spaces. I like saying burn it down. And I also like taking communion. My church in Tennessee, it's a woman pastor. It's all women who are on the staff or lay leader is a female. And I went one Sunday in a t shirt covered with flour because I was making a pie crust and I go, oh like, it's Communion Sunday. I really want to go. And of course, my t shirt said feminist AF had a little flour on it, but I went and our pastor had a cold, and so she didn't give communion, and a man did. And he had on a sweatshirt from the Masters. And I said, this is perfect. They don't allow women. This is exactly what Jesus had in mind with Matthew, the tax collector. Come on, let's all hang out together. And so that's how I like to be, you know, like, I was just kind of shouting down Steve Bannon because he made this video of me when I was going to run against McConnell, that I was an airhead.
