Rome collapsed because Romans stopped enforcing the conditions that made Roman citizenship worth anything. The same is happening to France right now.
The Western Empire's third- and fourth-century emperors, desperate for tax revenue and military manpower, settled entire Gothic and Frankish tribal confederacies inside the limes without demanding assimilation, military oaths, or any meaningful integration into Roman economic life. In 382 AD, Theodosius I settled roughly 100,000 Visigoths in the Balkans under their own chieftains, exempt from Roman law. They owed Rome nothing, and they acted accordingly. By 410, Rome fell.
The Austro-Hungarian Empire ran a version of the same experiment. Vienna absorbed millions of Slavic, Magyar, and Romanian subjects into a single fiscal and administrative unit without establishing coherent property rights or common rule of law across ethnicities. Capital fled the peripheral regions because contract enforcement varied by ethnicity and political connection. The empire spent itself policing internal tensions rather than producing anything.
Open borders can work when you couple them with private property, enforceable contracts, and zero access to a welfare state. Every historical collapse involved governments absorbing populations onto public land, public payroll, or public grain dole. Welfare states and open borders function as a single detonator, not two separate policies.
Same guy who pushed for the exit tax last year. No surprises.
🚨 NEW: Ed Miliband is reportedly blocking AI investment into Britain over concerns it harms net zero

My plane just landed in Chicago. I am forced to watch an ad to use the free airport wifi. Welcome to America!
A bunch of us have been asking for this for a while. Today, if one starts the exact same AI lab in SF vs London, SF one would be able to hire talent at much faster pace. Competing becomes impossible.
We need more of this
Today @IsembardGroup is launching the largest factory to open in London since WW2. (1/n)

no letter demanding we get to the frontier of ai. no letter about becoming a world leader, or housing the labs here. instead 40 parliamentarians who’ve been reading the doomsday narrative in the mainstream media want to ban something the uk doesn’t even build
Did not expect to meet people working on sheaves at ECCV.
In retrospect one of the best moment for me was meeting Cristian Bodnar @crisbodnar at @eccvconf
I stood waiting for people to ask me about the Poster rel to Neural Sheaf Diffusion and then he popped out of nowhere!

I am bewildered, and not very impressed, by the visceral, naked, irrational hatred spat out by some defenders of Jason Arday. If a Cambridge professor is accused of being an unqualified charlatan, the accusation might be racially motivated. On the other hand it might not, depending on the evidence. The correct question to ask is not, ”What is the colour of his skin” but “Is it in fact true that he is an unqualified charlatan?” Please examine the evidence before leaping to the assumption of racism.
As for the idea that journalists “piled in on him” and “hounded him to his death”, most attacks were against Cambridge University. Jason himself was widely regarded as an unfortunate victim of foolish promotion way beyond his ability to cope. In appointing him to a professorship for which he was manifestly unqualified – in ludicrously describing him as “the best in the world” – certain senior members of the university showed a level of patronising condescension towards black people that could fairly be described as racism, while at the same time making him tragically vulnerable to such attacks as came his way.

What UK AI startups need: @KanishkaNarayan
In California, one can start a company the day after leaving Google. My colleagues Jeff Dean, Oriol Vinyals et al made this very clear recently with their impressive speed.
In the UK, the same American companies impose 1 year garden leaves on senior AI researchers and 6 months on junior researchers. @GoogleDeepMind for example forced people to sign these contracts at the time of promotion, not the time of hiring.
What this means is that researchers cannot start new companies for up to 1 year, cannot easily hire, and in short: they cannot compete.
American VCs cannot understand why we move so slow.
It is time for UK Gov to do the right thing: Make garden leaves optional for employees.
If you’re an AI entrepreneur or VC in the UK or Europe, I would appreciate your comments here. You’ve all confided in me. It is time you let government know the urgency of this — everyone should speak up.

Overwhelmed by literature reviews? 🧪📚
Google Labs is launching an Early Access Program for Literature Insights, an AI research engine built with NotebookLM to help scientists, researchers, and PhDs search, extract, and synthesize academic literature.

In the age of agentic coding I see fewer and fewer people who go all the way to build something that actually works. A lot just stops at flashy demos.
I’ve been building something new at Project Prometheus these past few months. General AI for the physical world is the defining problem of our time, and the founding team is absurdly strong and moving fast. We’re hiring in SF/London/Zurich for real-world ML generalists. DMs open.
I am incredibly excited to work again with @xie_tian, who introduced me to the world of AI for materials many years ago. If you are interested in joining the team, please reach out!
Personal update: I have left Microsoft a couple of weeks ago. I am starting my new role as a founding member of technical staff at Project Prometheus. I will be helping to build a new team here.
It has been an incredible 4 years at Microsoft Research AI for Science. We have built MatterGen and MatterSim as a flywheel to accelerate materials discovery. We have synthesized these materials and tested their performance in the real world. It’s been an honor to work with everyone and make all of these into a reality.
We are hiring across London, San Francisco, and Zurich at Project Prometheus. Please reach out if you are interested in joining us.
This has been my schedule for a long time. However coding agents are changing everything. You can ask them to build stuff while you handle the “business stuff”. I suspect that orgs will become in the limit orgs of “managers” having many agents at their disposal.
In the meantime western countries are dismantling elite schools because they are not egalitarian. We are more communist than China.
Every year, China recruits 100,000 top high school students into a “Genius” program with a focus on STEM.
Alumni of this program include founders of Bytedance, PDD, Taobao and Meituan. As well as the core engineers behind TikTok algo, DeepSeek and Alibab’s Qwen AI models (as well as Tencent’s new Chief Scientist poached from OpenAI).
Yet another example of inefficient markets. Genie 3 has been out for a while and it’s been clear to everyone in the field that world models will completely change gaming.
Did not see that coming:
Google’s new Project Genie generative AI spooked investors, triggering sharp sell-offs across major gaming companies despite the tool only generating short, experimental game-like worlds at 720p and 24 FPS.
Shares of Unity plunged 20%, while Take-Two, CD Projekt Red, Nintendo, and Roblox also slid as markets overreacted to fears of AI replacing traditional game development.
