CSRBOX-CSR in India

What changes when we see vulnerable communities as leaders of change, rather than passive beneficiaries? It changes whose knowledge we value, who defines the problem, who shapes the solution, and ultimately, who holds the power to make decisions. This was central to my reflections at the One Purpos India Forum (OPIF) by CSRBOX, during our panel on “From Vulnerability to Security: Poverty, Financial Inclusion and Social Protection” organised by @csrboxorg. Technical solutions matter. But their impact depends on understanding the social realities, cultural expectations and structural discrimination that shape people’s lives. Access to a bank account means more when a woman can decide how her money is used. Enrolment in school becomes more secure when a child can speak up against child labour or child marriage - and expect institutions to respond. This is about agency: the freedom and ability to make choices, act on them, and influence decisions and institutions. I shared the story of a partnership that began more than two decades ago, when Estée Lauder approached @BBAIndia - India after discovering child labour in its mica supply chains in Jharkhand. The company’s leadership travelled there to understand the realities on the ground. The partnership implemented the Bal Mitra Gram model at scale, working with communities to lead to total eradication child labour and exploitation from the area. That willingness to take accountability and engage with the root causes of vulnerability matters. India’s CSR ecosystem brings commitment, resources and experience to complex social challenges. We can deepen this contribution by investing in communities’ capacity to lead, with the patience and continuity that this requires. Through Bal Panchayats and community collectives, children and adults identify challenges, influence decisions and organise for change. Working with government officials, police personnel and schools helps build the institutional responsiveness needed to sustain that change. At @smgc_official, we understand compassion as pragmatic and mindful problem-solving. This means recognising people’s agency and supporting their leadership in shaping solutions. For those of us designing, funding and implementing social programmes, the question is: are we acting as catalysts in the journey from awareness to participation, from participation to ownership, and from ownership to leadership? @k_satyarthi @sumedhakailash
