I’m in Japan for #chi2025! I’ll be presenting our late breaking work on designing a VR social collaborative experience for language learning! Come say hi, connect with me, and check out our poster: doi.org/10.1145/3706599.3719…
I’m presenting at #CHI2025 this afternoon on mutual aid, social media and care! What are the challenges & opportunities to meet people’s basic needs through digital systems?
Session: Mediated Social Interactions
📍Annex hall F203
🕐2:58pm

Since i recently published on this topic, my 2 cents:
‘Equivalent exchange’ speaks more to a barter system than mutual aid. Barter systems can co-exist with mutual aid, but they arent the same.
Mutual aid isn’t about trading equal favors; its a shared support system where ppl help each other, trusting that over time, things will even out within the community. It's community collaboration to meet each others' needs, not one-to-one transactions in a marketplace.
u get to decide what u are willing to offer unconditionally. U might not need a tarot reading, but tomorrow u could need a TV repair & someone might offer it. We’re all navigating the same complex systems, & mutual aid is about seeking collective wins together.

We literally cannot "ethics-based" "community response" "justice-oriented" "socially designed" our way out of the all-encompassing hellscape that is neoliberal racial capitalism.

Today @UMich posted my April pay stub of only $23. Fortunately, I still have money in my bank account so I don't need to worry about paying for the rent.

Can we normalize napping stations at conferences? I guarantee it will outweigh coffee breaks in enhancing interactions and learning #CHI2023

I have had the great pleasure of working with @andreagparker, committee members, (informal) mentors, & friends during my PhD. I enjoyed my PhD journey filled with love & endless snuggles. I'll begin my professor life as an Assistant Prof. in CS @williamandmary, because of love.
