AI guidance in education is only the starting point. Schools also need support to evaluate tools, test what works, and use that evidence to inform decisions.
In a new op-ed at @The74, @CRPE_edu makes the case that states don’t have to do this work alone. Trusted partners can help bridge the gap between setting AI guidance and giving schools the practical support to put it into action.
The op-ed highlights how SCORE is helping meet that need in Tennessee, from informing state-level AI recommendations to supporting an AI-powered literacy pilot that expanded to reach more than 4,000 students across seven districts in 2025-26.

It’s an honor to steward @bfrist’s vision for @SCORE_TN. Proud of the role our team has played in supporting the Tennessee Transformation in education. Lots more work ahead!
A few weeks ago, Tracy and I welcomed the @SCORE_TN team and their families to Old Town for our annual fall picnic. Since founding SCORE in 2009, it's been inspiring to see how far Tennessee students have come. Grateful to @davemansouri and this exceptional team.
Tennessee leaders are making decisions about how AI will be used in schools and classrooms. What should guide them?
SCORE’s new memo shares seven principles shaped by what we’ve learned alongside educators and partners. Together, they put student learning, strong teaching, and safety at the center of decisions about the use of AI. ow.ly/cUTu50ZVrme

Tennessee rose from the bottom 10 to 17th overall on NAEP. Kevin Huffman explores why in this @washingtonpost column.
Proud @SCORE_TN has been a trusted partner in this shared work. Progress is not a signal to slow down. It’s a call to go further.

“Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and the District of Columbia have all posted sustained post-pandemic NAEP gains even as scores have fallen nationally, and they have done so with higher poverty rates and — except for D.C. — lower per-pupil spending than the national average.
In three decades of testing, this is the first time a cluster of states has moved outcomes this way.”

“Every few years, international educational test scores are announced, and the United States spends a week lamenting the state of its schools before moving on,” Kevin Huffman writes.

Beginning in 2027, a new federal tax credit could expand Tennessee students’ access to tutoring, instructional materials, special needs services, transportation, and more.

It was a pleasure joining Hamilton County Mayor @westonwamp and @TNChamber CEO Josh Brown in a panel led by @SCORE_TN President & CEO @davemansouri to discuss workforce development across our state.
As we continue to support @Jobs4_TN during the rollout of TNWorks — the single source for workforce in our state — we're excited about the collaboration between education, economic development and workforce in Tennessee.
When a company expands in or moves to Tennessee, we want them to know our state has the highly skilled workers it needs to be successful. 🤝
Congratulations, @suptking!

Well said @ScarlettTara.
“When a Title I public charter school produces reading scores that would lead every public school district in Tennessee, our first reaction should not be skepticism. It should be curiosity.”
Kudos @NashClassical! 👏

I wrote an op-ed for today's WSJ:
The most popular policy response to future AI disruption is job training. Call it the Dolly Parton of social policy. Everyone likes it.
But there's one problem: There are scores of job-training programs today but few work.

What should every Tennessee student know and be able to do in math to succeed after graduation? A key committee reconvenes this week to discuss math academic standards.
Math academic standards shape teaching and the expectations that Tennessee sets for student readiness. We advocate for a focus on strong foundations, coherent learning from grade to grade, and preparation for college, careers and an increasingly data-driven economy.

Nearly half of America’s K–12 school buildings are about 50 years old. Many were built for a time when students were not inside during the hottest weeks of the year.
That assumption no longer holds. Schools can prepare.
