i cried over not being able to post on ao3 but never over a man, a win is a win 😎

some people have asked me to share my fics on drive, and i wanted to explain a few things about why i’m hesitant about doing that. i’m quite protective of my work, and i’m always careful about where i share it and who has access to it. the thought of the files ending up in the wrong hands, with very little control over what happens to them afterwards, genuinely worries me. there’s also the question of engagement. i know comments on ao3 can already be few and far between, and moving the fics to drive, where people would simply have them saved on their computers, could make that even less likely. i worry that we might end up with very little interaction at all. honestly, this is one of the reasons i’m hesitant about sharing the latest rtf chapter that way. i worked incredibly hard on it, and the thought of sharing something i put so much time and effort into with twenty people, only for perhaps two of them to offer any feedback, is a little discouraging. i don’t think it’s unreasonable to want some engagement in return for sharing my work. another thing is that i reread and edit my work quite often. i’ve lost count of how many times i’ve gone back to a chapter on ao3, pressed the edit button and made little changes while rereading. the problem is that i don’t always remember exactly what i’ve changed, and i have fics that are over 100k words long. having separate files floating around makes me anxious because i wouldn’t know whether people were reading the most recent version or an older one. keeping everything on ao3 means i have one place where i can make corrections and know that everyone has access to the same version. i know plenty of writers are comfortable sharing their work through drive, and that’s absolutely fine. i’m not saying there’s anything wrong with doing it that way, and i’m genuinely glad it works for them. i just know myself, and i’m a very anxious person when it comes to things i can’t control. even after so much therapy, i still have my episodes, and this is something i’m having quite a lot of doubts about. i know i might sound overly cautious or pessimistic, but i hope you can understand that it’s not simply a matter of uploading a few documents and sharing a link for me. there are several things involved, and i need to feel comfortable with the decision too. i hope you can see where i’m coming from.
