We study the geography of cellular Standard Essential Patents in Europe. The striking finding: Helsinki and Stockholm alone account for around one-third of all European cellular SEPs. Standards matter — and their geography is highly uneven.

Unlike many other inventions, SEPs do not simply scale with city size or prior technological strength. Early standard-setting leadership creates strong path-dependent advantages, but these can weaken across generations. Important implications for 5G, 6G & industrial policy.

Is AI an economic equalizer across Europe, or is it widening the regional divide?🌍 Our new open-access paper in Regional Studies maps the spatial geography of AI across EU NUTS2 regions using a multi-dimensional framework. Here is what we discovered: 👇 doi.org/10.1080/00343404.202…

We reveal a striking "spatial paradox": while potential AI exposure & worker-level experimentation are widespread across Europe, frontier AI innovation & formal firm-level adoption remain heavily concentrated in a handful of high-income urban hubs.

A persistent "implementation gap" separates structural exposure from productive firm use due to organizational frictions. Left unmanaged market forces will widen divergence. We argue for place-sensitive regional policies to bridge the divide.🏛️ #AI #RegionalDevelopment #EUPolicy

New paper out in TFSC: Bridging industry and technology: The spatial and sectoral embedded dynamics of green technology diversification How do regions diversify into new green technologies? We show that both technology and industry matter. doi.org/10.1016/j.techfore.2…

The geography matters too: the spatial pattern of green technology entry is highly uneven, with strong regional differences across China.

Policy implication: supporting green transitions is not only about funding green R&D. It also requires strengthening the industrial structures that allow new green technologies to take root, diffuse, and scale. #EconomicGeography #GreenInnovation #IndustrialPolicy #EEG #China
