Dolores Huerta never held elected office, nor did she ever lead a federal or state agency.
She reshaped the entire American political landscape through the force of her advocacy for labor rights and insistence on lifting up the most vulnerable among us.
The most powerful people in the country looked to her for moral guidance and political wisdom, and the least powerful found in her a friend and ally who treated them as equals.
We lost a giant today.

Sixty-three years ago today, Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley were murdered in the bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church.
They were children. Their lives were stolen by racial hatred and terrorism.
Remember their names. Honor their lives. And continue the work of confronting the hatred and dehumanization that made their murders possible.

I was also very honored to be on @CapRadioInsight this afternoon with @VickiLGonzalez to talk about what these layoffs mean for Sacramento:

I’m just a Senator, not a marketing manager, but this seems like a pretty good indication that the recent @sacbee_news cuts are in fact NOT driven by “subscriber interest”.
That’s over 400k engagement in less than 24 hours from just one of Sacramento’s favorite journalists let go yesterday.
*sigh*

Joe, for 38 years, you have been so much more than a sports reporter—you have been a storyteller, a historian, and a champion for high school athletics throughout the Sacramento region.
You gave countless student-athletes, coaches, schools, and communities an opportunity to have their stories told and their accomplishments recognized. Your passion for high school sports and, more importantly, the young people who play them has always come through in your work.
We at Grant Union High School have tremendous appreciation and respect for you and the journalism you have provided over the years. You have covered generations of Pacers with professionalism, fairness, enthusiasm, and a genuine respect for our school, our athletes, and our community.
38 years is an incredible legacy, Joe. While this chapter may be ending, there is no doubt that your voice, knowledge, relationships, and love for Sacramento-area high school sports still have many chapters ahead.
Thank you for telling our stories. Thank you for supporting our kids. And thank you for everything you have meant to high school sports in this region.
Much respect from the Grant Union High School Pacer Family. 💙💛
We look forward to seeing what’s next for you, Joe. You’re not done yet.

As part of national corporate cuts, McClatchy yesterday laid off 12 SacBee journalists including 5 @SacBeeGuild members.
This is by far the worst round of layoffs I’ve seen at the Bee since I was hired in Oct 2018.
Absolutely devastating and it’s the public who will suffer most

These are the journalists and the coverage communities are now left without, as told by the publications’ workers: newsguild.org/mcclatchy-laid…

This man is an institution in our city. The absolute best at his profession. Endless love and respect for an amazing reporter and wonderful person.

I don’t know you personally, but as someone who worked for McClatchy at the News and Observer in Raleigh, I don’t think people realize how bad this is. What’s happened to local news is devastating.
When local coverage is gutted, you’re losing people who intimately know your community. The local perspective is lost and the narrative of the community becomes shaped by outsiders who don’t understand the people there or completely ignored altogether.

It’s been 18 years since I joined McClatchy and nine since I left. The company continues to part ways with journalists who do essential work in their communities. Please think of them today and send them job postings.

We lost good people today. Please share far and wide with anyone you know who may need it. It’s a sad day.

Heartbreaking to see a wave of layoffs across McClatchy, parent company of Miami Herald, KC Star and many other outlets. If you have newsroom jobs, hire these great journalists 🙏

Please note: There are nation wide layoffs happening at McClatchy. We are only speaking on behalf of our bargaining units. Statements from other NewsGuild locals and the national union will come out in the following days.
The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by @mcclatchy 's decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. This includes 10 journalists in Idaho, and seven across Washington.
These severe cuts will hobble these news organizations and leave the public throughout the Northwest less informed about the events and decisions that affect them, and with fewer people holding the powerful to account.
These are journalists who investigated local hospitals, served as watchdogs over state and local government, showed up at every high school game, jumped in to cover breaking news like wildfires, covered news in overlooked communities, and monitored development in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. One of these papers will no longer have a dedicated reporter covering city hall. Another will no longer have anyone dedicated to covering the state capitol.
McClatchy has decided that short-term profits for a hedge fund matter more than the wellbeing of the communities that its newspapers are supposed to serve. That is a model that is destined to fail.

NEW: Huge layoffs across McClatchy newspapers today, with some newsrooms gutted by a third. An internal email from management says consumer revenue has dipped 41% and "we cannot continue investing where subscriber interest does not support the investment"

Sunday would have been my 5 year anniversary at The Bee. Today I was informed I am part of the massive layoffs happening at McClatchy.
I’m Sacrsmento born and raised, and it’s been an honor to serve my community. I don’t know what’s next, but I know I’ll be ok.

A throaty contralto that stretched blues, country, and folk into the heart of jazz earned her the title "America's Best Singer." Cassandra Wilson has died at 70, leaving behind two Grammys and a sound entirely her own. zurl.co/uWKQ7

ESPN said it wanted to remove politics from sports coverage, then fired a slew of Black talent, launched a college football show devoid of Black hosts and aired Tr**p's Patriot Games.
We say that's an alarming message sent to the Black sports community.
