This is a pretty basic journalistic standard. Sources can request to no longer be on the record, but once on the record has been granted journalists are in no way required to comply. – at Spokane, WA
Seriously NYT? "Last week, as The Times prepared to publish this article, Ms. Rios, who had been planning to file a wrongful termination lawsuit against the Peltola campaign, contacted The Times and said she wanted to take back her previous statements. “As discussed on our call earlier today, I am confirming that I have retracted all statements made regarding the 2026 Alaska Senate Race in connection with any article you may or may not be writing,” Ms. Rios wrote. “I am not willing to be a source for any story in any capacity.” It is rare for a source to seek to retract comments made in previous interviews, and The Times’s standards do not obligate reporters to comply with such requests. The Times had never agreed that those previous interviews could not be published, and informed Ms. Rios last week that they would be a part of this story."

This is a broad, across-the-board complaint about campaign and PR folks: Too many of you are sending releases with just hours' notice, particularly for events that your team has obviously had significant notice for. (Speaking engagements, forums, etc.)

AI is not going to "save local journalism." It can be a helpful tool in some instances, but AI-generated local news just erodes the remaining trust in news sources (but can be a handy excuse for media companies to lay off reporters!)
Axios CEO says the company is building an Axios Local "Super System" that "uses AI to track government action, community data and coming events" and will "give local reporters more time for local reporting." axios.com/2026/10/24/axios-a…

I think it's a good idea for us to demystify journalism and show our work/behind the scenes as much as possible. So much of the public doesn't understand how journalism is done and that's on us, tbh.
We're trying something new at @nytimes: "The Backstory," a newsletter digging into Times journalism and decision-making. We also talk to critics and skeptics of The Times in a segment called "Sound Off." You can read our first edition here: nytimes.com/2026/10/15/insid…

As someone whose toddler almost attended the 10/1 storytime mentioned in this article before it was abruptly canceled, this @newsobserver reporting very much has my attention. newsobserver.com/news/local/…

While most of the region remains at low-moderate color, some patches of peak can be found around 5,000 feet up along the blue ridge parkway in NC! 🍁🍂 – at Waynesville, NC

I am so tired of Facebook pages cosplaying as journalists and slop sites running hardworking reporters' articles through AI chatbots and posting their hacked-up version without any credit to the people who actually investigated the story. Please stop supporting these people.

Worth a listen 👇 All the money is going to influencers, podcasts, and others who are often commentating on the underlying reporting of journalists who have seen their reporting ranks hollowed out over many years.

Some news: After 5-plus years, this past week ended my tenure at the Idaho Statesman. It was the best job I ever had. I volunteered for a buyout after mass layoffs by McClatchy hit our newsroom. What's next, I don't yet know. But I've got an #Idaho4 book in the works. Stay tuned.

The number of times I’ve seen my work ripped off by people like this (never knowingly by this person, though) and crime Facebook pages is ridiculous. And promoting it like this as though they’re an actual alternative to local reporters stinks.
As local news budgets shrink and misinformation spreads, independent creators are stepping up to keep communities informed. With more than half a million followers, TikToker Andrew Barton is passionate about local journalism. Channel 4 News asked him to investigate what the future of local news looks like and whether new government funding can help keep it alive.

Yet again, credit goes to @dani__battaglia who flagged this starting to happen weeks ago, and was called a liar by the @ncgop comms bros. Every time. 🔁
