Risk to financial system
And so it begins. South Korea's biggest banks were hit by a cyberattack and the hacker didn't even use the best SOTA models, DeepSeek 4.1 Flash, GLM-5.3 and Grok 4.6. Just imagine what's possible with the very best models.

Last week some of South Korea's biggest banks were hit by a cyberattack. Thanks to a report from CrowdStrike tonight, we now know the entire hack may have been done by a single person. He used a combined stack of an open-source AI penetration tool named ARTEX, DeepSeek v4.1-Flash, GLM-5.3, Grok 4.6, and Claude Code.

Power users are driving consumer AI market growth. The top 1% of US consumer AI payers average $903 a month, while flat plans hold the median at $25. One top-1% payer spends as much as roughly 59 bottom-half payers, on average. Median spend has barely moved, while average spend in the top 1% climbed from $504 to $903 a month between January 2025 and August 2026. Model labs are better placed than apps built on their models to capture consumer AI's top 1% of spenders. Those users average $903 a month, up from $504, and most of it buys model usage. A lab pays only its serving cost for that usage, while an app pays API prices. Anthropic earlier said one $200 Max subscriber ran up tens of thousands of dollars in usage, a bill no API-paying app could absorb. Apps that want this tier have to own more of the model, as Cursor began doing with its Composer coding model.
The top 1% of AI spenders now outspend the bottom 50% combined They spend an average of $903/month, while the median customer spends just $25 More charts in our Top 100 Consumer AI Apps breakdown: a16z.news/p/top-100-consumer…

Ben Affleck reveals he writes Python, understands convolutional neural networks, worked extensively with GPUs, and used his celebrity status to get private looks at Google and OpenAI’s video models “I’ve always been kind of into computers since I was young. Then, when film started to move from analog film to digital, I became more interested in that aspect of it. The visual-effects workflow for many years has included machine learning, so I can write pretty shitty Python scripts and stuff like that. “With convolutional neural networks, which were the precursors to what the transformer can do, which is much more computation simultaneously, you would do things like look at what’s called a tensor. That’s the numerical translation of a visual image in numbers, like the batch number, the frame number and the red, green and blue values of each pixel in each frame. It’s just that simple. That numeric is called a tensor. “You’d use a convolutional neural network to identify patterns that reveal what’s called edge detection or feature extraction, which is identifying patterns well enough to know, this is where the window ledge is, so we can more easily take the green-screen image out and replace it with something. “That was familiar to me early on because, prior to Artists Equity, I had a small visual-effects company. I’ve worked with GPUs a lot too. The visual-effects guys said, ‘Hey, you should see. There are a couple: Google and this other company, OpenAI, are doing really interesting stuff with transformers in video.’ “I’ve learned that I can actually just call up and go, ‘Hey, it’s Ben Affleck. Can I come see what you’re doing?’ Sometimes people say yes, to my astonishment.”
$ANET Andy Bechtolsheim says AI has made optics demand about 10 times bigger in five years and the industry is only at the "very beginning" "So I guess I don't need to tell you that AI has been driving this incredible increase in demand for high-speed optics, which is probably now 10 times bigger than it used to be five years ago..." "And what I want to talk to you today is that we're not at the end of this journey, but rather the very beginning. There's easily another order of magnitude increase in bits needed for the next generation kind of data centers." "So what I want to talk about first is what's happening at the data center level, and how we as an industry have to get together to solve these problems of this very rapid and high demand growth as fast as possible, since AI can't wait." ______ For full set of takeaways to Andy's AI Datacenter and Optics lecture: firesidealpha.substack.com/p…

OpenAI published the full papers behind its open-problems claim: 722 manuscripts covering 372 math results. OpenAI built this catalogue by giving its internal model roughly 4K research problems during testing, then grouping and filtering the output into 372 significant result families. Almost all of those results came from the same standard setup, and each used on average the computing equivalent of 3 hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking.
We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results. github.com/openai/math

Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer: "Internally at Meta, we have seen cases where, if you develop the right agentic loop and have the right evaluation system and metric for the agents to optimize, a swarm of agents can accomplish more than a team of 100 engineers. They can do it very handily, actually, very easily." Wang was in conversation with Garry Tan, head of Y Combinator, at Startup School 2026. Interested in AI? Jacob Coxon (Anthropic researcher whol quit a few days back) during the New York City Council hearing on Monday. "Automating AI research is now the primary goal of these companies. It's what they're really gunning for. At my last job, I was in some sense working to automate myself. When I was at OpenAI, we had milestones for an automated AI researcher around 2027 or 2028, and we are on track or beating these expectations. That's a matter of months from now, not decades, or even five years. Once AI research is automated, humans will be much further out of the loop than we are today. And today is already not great. I can tell you firsthand that the majority of the code is now written by AI, and people do not check it that carefully anymore." ---- Full video on "Forbes Breaking News" YouTube channel, (link in comment)

HOLY, the rumors were true: OpenAI has published 722 mathematical manuscripts produced by an *unreleased* internal model. The collection groups them into 372 families of related results, drawn from an evaluation involving approximately 4,000 research problems. OpenAI says the standard procedure used an average of three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking compute per result. The release includes papers, proof artifacts and selected reasoning summaries. The model itself remains unreleased.

Jacob Coxon says Anthropic employees call themselves “ants” and sacrifice their careers for the company’s singular pursuit of superintelligence, while calling OpenAI "distracted and messy" “At Anthropic, it felt a lot more like—well, for starters, the employees call themselves ants. They’re ants in the anthill. Everyone is like a worker ant trying to make Anthropic’s mission go well. “People are very willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of the mission. They’ll take on work that’s less interesting, less big, bold and exciting, and less flashy. They’ll do it at a hit to their own interests for the good of the company. “That’s because every decision comes back down to, ‘Is this going to get us to superintelligence faster?’ “You’ve seen Sora, the video platform OpenAI made. Anthropic would never make Sora because it’s not on the core path to artificial superintelligence. OpenAI is distracted and messy. One guy says, ‘I want to do Sora,’ or, ‘I want to build a little device,’ and they let them do it because it doesn’t have the same focus. At Anthropic, that would never happen.” Patrick Bet-David: “Who would shut it down? The seven co-founders?” Jacob Coxon: “They’d all agree. It would be like, ‘This video isn’t the right direction for heading straight to superintelligence.’”
Ex-Anthropic Jacob Coxon says he's 90% certain China already has spies inside both OpenAI and Anthropic Jacob Coxon: “Right now, if we just stopped, they would try and catch up. But I think one really important thing people don’t realize is that China already has spies at OpenAI and Anthropic. China has the ability to hack at any time. If we pull ahead, that doesn’t give us a big lead. They can just step in, steal our progress at any time and catch up.” Patrick Bet-David: “How certain are you that they already have spies there?” Jacob Coxon: “Ninety percent. Yeah, it’s almost certain that they have spies.”

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious. Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm. For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

President Trump just told TIME he "might" take government stakes in OpenAI and Anthropic, copying his Intel deal. But he ruled out nationalizing frontier labs and he described Nvidia the same way, saying Jensen Huang could sell a restricted chip only if the US took a cut. Trump also said Amodei's views differed from media portrayals, but warned that companies seeking regulation risk being put out of business.
