UNESCO Heritage Deputy Chief “Not Aware” of Azerbaijan Destroying Armenian Churches in Occupied Artsakh
➖➖➖
UNESCO World Heritage Centre Deputy Director Jyoti Hosagrahar told NEWSam in Yerevan that she could not comment on the destruction of Armenian churches in Occupied Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) because she was “not aware” of it. When the reporter raised reports of vandalism, she said she had to go.
NEWSam spoke to Hosagrahar at an international meeting on nature and culture at the Matenadaran, Armenia’s institute of ancient manuscripts. Yerevan is hosting COP17, the UN Biodiversity Conference, from October 19 to 30, and UNESCO co-convened the conference’s Nature and Culture Summit.
On October 25, Hosagrahar spoke at the Matenadaran at a high-level event of the international working group on nature and culture, held within the framework of COP17. In her speech, she said Armenia has a rich historical, cultural and natural heritage, Aravot reported.
The reporter told Hosagrahar that Armenian society is concerned about the conservation of Armenian cultural heritage in Artsakh because of the many reports that churches there are being destroyed, and asked how UNESCO is responding.
“I cannot comment on churches being destroyed because I’m not aware of what churches are being destroyed,” Hosagrahar said, smiling, a glass of white wine in hand.
When the reporter said there are many reports of acts of vandalism, Hosagrahar closed her eyes and showed visible discomfort. “Sorry, I have to go,” she said.
Satellite imagery in April 2026 confirmed that Azerbaijan had razed the Holy Mother of God Cathedral in Stepanakert, the largest Armenian cathedral in Artsakh. The Armenian Apostolic Church consecrated the cathedral in 2019 after nearly 13 years of construction.
Azerbaijan’s government-controlled Islamic religious body defended the demolition. It claimed Azerbaijani authorities had “both legal and moral grounds” and said tearing down the building “cannot be considered a destruction of religious or cultural heritage.” The building it tore down was a consecrated Armenian cathedral. The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin condemned the demolitions as “state-level vandalism” meant to “erase the Armenian trace from Artsakh.”
Azerbaijan’s September 2023 ethnic cleansing of Artsakh forcibly displaced 120,000 Armenians, including the Armenian population of Stepanakert. Azerbaijan continues to unlawfully hold Armenian hostages in Baku. After sham trials, Azerbaijani courts sentenced former Artsakh leaders and officials Arayik Harutyunyan, Davit Babayan, Davit Ishkhanyan, Levon Mnatsakanyan and Davit Manukyan to life in prison, and Arkadi Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan and Ruben Vardanyan to 20 years each.
UNESCO has received reports of the destruction. In October 2024, Krista Pikkat, Director of UNESCO’s Culture and Emergencies Entity, told Armenpress, “We have received reports from all different concerned parties about the alleged destruction.” She said UNESCO “has been monitoring the situation with concern.”
UNESCO tried to send a technical mission to Artsakh in 2020. In December 2020, UNESCO said it was waiting only on Azerbaijan’s response, having approached Azerbaijani authorities “several times without success.” The mission never took place.
In 2021, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Azerbaijan to prevent and punish vandalism and desecration of Armenian cultural heritage, including churches. Azerbaijan razed the Stepanakert cathedral more than 4 years later.

Israel’s apartheid system is turning the olive harvest into a season of horror for families in the occupied West Bank. This is state-sponsored brutality. It is ethnic cleansing.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry is lying.
No coordination was required, and we were never told that it was. We were not in a restricted security area. We did not pass any checkpoints.
Palestinian farmers do not — and should not — need permits to harvest their own olive fields. But they fear doing so, because the IDF doesn’t protect them from settler violence.
We’re trying to model solidarity & co-existence between Jews and Palestinians, and to call attention to the horrors of the occupation. The Israeli government is trying to foment violence between Jews and Palestinians, and to make it impossible for Palestinians to harvest their olive groves, drive on their roads, or live in their homes.
This was not about harvesting olives.
It was about harvesting headlines.
Brad Lander’s latest stunt is nothing more than a calculated political provocation.
Lander traveled to a foreign country, deliberately entered a restricted security area, and participated in an unauthorized activity without the required coordination.
What makes this stunt even more outrageous is that his own team contacted Israeli representatives in the United States ahead of his visit and was explicitly informed that proper coordination with the relevant authorities was required.
He chose to ignore those instructions.
At a time of heightened security tensions, Israeli security forces have a responsibility to protect lives, prevent dangerous incidents, and maintain public order.
Had anyone been injured as a result of his reckless political theater, Lander would undoubtedly have been among the first to demand that Israeli authorities intervene and provide protection.
Brad Lander came looking for a confrontation. Now he is pretending to be its victim.

This will get overshadowed by the attack on an American journalist, but half an hour after Heidi was beaten, the IDF shot a Palestinian man simply standing inside his own village.
Then the soldiers pointed an assault rifle at the paramedics trying to help the victim.

Disgusting terrorism.
Masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers on Friday, setting olive groves on fire and slinging rocks.
Caught in the attack was Post photographer Heidi Levine. “They just kept kicking me and kicking me, like probably 50 times,” Levine said. wapo.st/4yt6dHY
I am shocked by the political inertia in the face of what Israelis -settlers and soldiers- are doing in Palestine, where terror has become a daily reality. In the West Bank, torching century old trees and poisoning livestock. When will the EU take action against Apartheid Israel?

Israel killed some of its own citizens on October 7, 2023 through the deployment of the so-called Hannibal Directive.
Here's what we know about the military policy.
⛔️The crimes against humanity committed daily by the Israeli war criminals are beyond comprehension‼️

🇵🇸🇮🇱 Nine minutes of testimonies from both Israeli soldiers and civilians explaining how the IDF killed their own people on October 7.
Mehdi Hasan just dismantled Jonathan Conricus:
He confronted him with Israeli soldiers' own testimonies: 'We were allowed to kill anyone. We hacked the phone of a 12-year-old girl, then we killed her. We killed a boy with a drone because he crossed an invisible line, and then we left his body for dogs to eat.'
