Staff Sergeant Daniel Hertz died in a training accident in Germany in February. He was 34.
His father, Frank, flew to Dover to bring him home, and on the flight back to Omaha he realized nobody had asked about the dog.
Kaiser is a 6-year-old German shepherd. Daniel bought him as a puppy from a breeder outside Stuttgart during his first posting and kept him through two more. When Daniel died, the dog was at his apartment near the base with a neighbor feeding him.
Frank is 79 and a retired high school shop teacher. He'd met Kaiser twice, on video calls.
Flying a large dog from Germany to Nebraska took weeks. Kaiser needed a vet exam, a rabies certificate, an entry form for the CDC and a crate big enough for a 90-pound shepherd. Only one airline would fly a dog that size that time of year, and the next open cargo slot was five weeks out.
In Germany, Daniel's platoon sergeant, Mike Bauer, drove Kaiser to his own house, kept him for five weeks and sent Frank a video every night of the dog lying by the door.
Frank had never used email much. His granddaughter set him up with an account, and he spent most of March on the phone with a pet shipping company and the cargo office at the Chicago airport, writing everything on a yellow legal pad.
The bill came to about $4,700. Frank paid it out of Daniel's life insurance, and he said that was what Daniel would have wanted.
Kaiser landed in Chicago on a Wednesday in April. Frank and his wife drove the 470 miles the day before and slept at a motel by the airport. At the cargo warehouse a handler wheeled the big plastic crate out on a dolly and set it down on the concrete floor.
Frank knelt down in front of it and opened the door.
Kaiser came out slowly. He walked around Frank once, sniffing his hands and his jacket, the way a dog checks a stranger. Kaiser stopped, pushed his nose hard into Frank's neck and stood there, breathing him in.
Frank's wife says he sounds just like Daniel when he talks.
Kaiser sleeps in Daniel's old bedroom now, on the floor next to the bed. Every night Frank goes in and sits on the edge of the bed for a while before he turns out the light.

We have arrived in Baton Rouge. A little later than expected because we had a small car crash on the way. Nothing serious though, everyone is fine.
On a positive note, we saw this sign welcoming us back to Baton Rouge. I was on my phone when one of my friends suddenly screamed, “I swear to God, that sign just said ‘Welcome back Freddy’.”

I was three days away from returning my rescue German Shepherd, Duke.
For two weeks straight, every afternoon at exactly 3:00 PM, he would go completely ballistic at the living room window. He’d pace, throw his 90-pound body against the glass, and howl until he was hoarse. My landlord gave me a final warning: fix it or get evicted.
I tried blackout curtains. I tried distraction toys. I tried crate training. Nothing worked.
Yesterday, I lost my temper. He started screaming at the glass again, looking across the street at my elderly neighbor Mrs. Gable’s house. I grabbed his leash to pull him into the bedroom, but he yanked me out the front door and dragged me straight across the lawn to her porch.
He didn't bark at the door. He just sat down and let out one long, desperate whine.
I knocked. No answer. I tried the handle unlocked.
Mrs. Gable was lying on her kitchen floor. She’d fallen two days prior, broken her hip, and couldn't reach her phone. Duke had been hearing her faint cries through the open window across the street every afternoon when the traffic noise died down.
The paramedics said another day would have been too late.
Duke isn't loud. He just listens closer than the rest of us. He's sleeping on his bed right next to me, and he's not going anywhere.

Barack Obama wasn’t America’s savior — he was the spark that helped set this country on fire.
The damage done to our unity, our police, and our trust in one another is something this nation is still dealing with today.
He didn’t bring hope and unity. He brought division. Americans were turned against one another, and law enforcement became a target. Under his watch, hostility toward police grew, and officers were increasingly treated like the enemy instead of the people risking their lives to protect their communities.
Before Obama, there was far more respect for the badge. By the end of his presidency, cities were burning, officers were being ambushed, and the country was more divided over race and policing than it had been in years.
He didn’t heal old wounds — he helped tear them back open. He didn’t unite the country — he left it more divided.
The damage done to our unity, our police, and our faith in one another is something America is still paying for today.

I’ve been asked by many about the potential of an upcoming Truckers Strike on Oct 1st. To be honest I can’t give a definite answer one way or the other. But what I can say is. I’ve seen the calls for strikes many times over the years that never played out. From past experience I wouldn’t be hitting any panic buttons.
