He did not estimate Scotland leaving the UK, putting a border on its largest market, inheriting a share of UK debt, inventing a currency, then queueing for EU accession with an 11% deficit. Those are not the same experiment. Relabelling a UK Brexit paper as an “independence dividend” is fraud by spreadsheet. Start with the books the SNP publishes. GERS 2025-26 — official statistics from their government — records revenue raised in Scotland and spending for and on behalf of Scotland: • Earned: £98.3bn • Spent: £123.6bn • Gap: £25.3bn • 10.9% of GDP UK deficit the same year: 4.2%. That is not a vibe. That is every pound in and every pound out. If Scotland left our UK tomorrow, that gap does not evaporate because a minister calls it “notional.” It is the jumping-off point. Last five years average is still ~£1.26 spent for every £1 raised. Revenue per head is in line with the UK. Spending per head is £2,720 higher. IFS: ~£4,563 of deficit per Scot vs ~£1,841 UK-wide (inc Scotland). EU accession is not a vibe either. Maastricht: deficit ≤3% of GDP, debt ≤60% or falling, two years of a stable currency in ERM II. Scotland has no currency, no central bank track record, and a published deficit more than three times the cap. Brussels does not fast-track that. It parks Hungary and Poland in excessive-deficit procedures for far smaller holes. Then debt. UK public sector net debt ≈ £2.99 trillion. Scotland is ~8.1% of the population. A population share is ~£240bn — over 100% of Scottish GDP — before you add another £25bn year. New-state borrowers do not get UK gilt rates. They get a premium. Then the border they never price. ~60% of Scotland’s exports go to the rest of the UK. ~18% go to the EU. Independence + EU membership means customs, SPS and regulatory friction with the market that is three times the EU. That is the same class of cost Bloom attributed to Brexit, applied to the bigger customer. You do not get richer by taxing your main client. Workforce: 22.6% of Scottish jobs are public sector vs ~17% in England. The extra spend is in the payroll. Closing an 11% gap means tax, cuts, or both. “Growth will fix it” has had 25 years of GERS to show up. It hasn’t. So stack the per-person numbers: • Bloom’s UK Brexit figure, even if you swallow it whole: ~£3,000 • Extra GERS deficit vs UK: ~£2,700 • Extra spend vs UK: £2,720 • Headline GERS hole: ~£4,560 You do not net a dividend. You net a transition: inherited debt, higher borrowing costs, a border with England, years in the EU waiting room, and a budget that already spends 26p more than it earns on every pound. If the SNP have a day-one budget that gets from −10.9% to 3%, a currency, and a trade model that prices the rUK border instead of ignoring it — publish it. Until then this is not an economic case. It is a slogan with a Stanford citation taped to it. Ask @TheSNP @ScotGov to show the restructuring. GERS already showed the starting line.
