Can AI learn the language of food without ever tasting it?
I recently had a fascinating conversation with Holger Nauheimer for his new podcast, 'I Have Never Tasted a Tomato'.

In a remarkable achievement, Team Catalyst, comprising Tushita Kapoor (IIIT-Delhi), Aryan Bhutyal (SRM-IST, Chennai), Kanishka Singh (TIET, Patiala), and Rushil Agarwal (IIIT Gwalior), has emerged as the National Winner of Flipkart GRID 8.0 – Data Science Track, competing against over 1.7 lakh registrations from across the country.
The team developed FlipLens – an Autonomous Return Triage System, an end-to-end solution designed to identify fraudulent e-commerce return requests while ensuring a seamless experience for genuine customers.
By analysing order details, customer history, product information, submitted evidence and return policies, FlipLens intelligently categorises requests for auto-approval, auto-rejection or human review. The solution also emphasises explainable, policy-backed decisions while recognising situations that require human intervention.
Congratulations to Tushita and the entire Team Catalyst on this outstanding achievement! Your innovation and problem-solving approach make us proud.

What does the future of food look like when a chef, an anthropologist, an AI researcher, a sensory scientist, a microbiome researcher, a molecular biologist, and an entrepreneur sit at the same table?

Computational Gastronomy seeks to connect these scales through data, science, and AI. At #GastroSym2026, we hope to bring disciplines together that do not ordinarily speak to one another—and ask what becomes possible when they do.
