Chilean police violently repressed a Santiago student protest with water cannons and teargas on Thursday. The mobilization – which took place a day after President Jose Antonio Kast introduced the 2027 Budget Bill – was called as part of the National Education Strike protesting potential cuts to education funding.
The day of action was called by the Confederation of Students of Chile (CONFECH) under the slogan "Not a peso less for education." Workers, lawyers, and teachers joined the march along with the students.
Local media reported at least 25 arrests.

Imagine only being allowed out of the home for three hours a week.
That is my reality as of yesterday, too.
This is so that govt could ‘save’ money and billionaires could make more money.
It was a Morrison idea and it’s been adopted by the Albanese government.
Think about what you can do in three hours, before you must be home.
Shopping, even. Visiting your mum or helping your kid. A birthday party forty minutes away.
All the stories in my head are coming true and I hear them every day from our community.
This one. I haven’t heard the exact words yet, it’s waiting to be written.

‘@AlboMP says I cannot leave the house for more than three hours.’
‘A week.’
The other children looked at her. It was the last birthday party they ever saw her at, and they would never know that her mum had to give up work now, that the end of that work meant homelessness and that it was very hard to fit a wheelchair in a tent.
Most of all, they wouldn’t know she had chosen this party, of all the things she could have chosen to do with her three hours a week.’
That is now our reality.
They say we can go to work.
We can go to the doctor.
We had to fight for that.
The rest? Cut, and on top of those cuts, our lives cut in half.
And this is how we die.
