Some of our patients are overwhelmed by the onslaught of scammers every time they unlock their phone or open a web browser. This video gives a taste of what we are up against:

We all know that some jobs eventually will go to robots, but I did not know about this FDA-approved phlebotomy-bot. It's not a replacement for an experienced phlebotomist, but it's probably better than some of us, and I'm impressed that it works at all. youtube.com/watch?v=BSqf1ssl…
Several useful & interesting observations in this meta-analysis of antihypertensive drug tolerability, including: “all but CCBs significantly decreased headache compared with placebo.” jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

New work from Claire Gao in @NatMetabolism uncovering the intracellular signaling mechanisms by which semaglutide drives weight loss in the brain. This study goes DEEP into how GLP1R signaling works inside hindbrain neurons. 🧠⚡ nature.com/articles/s42255-0…
Interesting case! Given the emotional nature of musical expression, perhaps this "trick" harnesses a limbic (cingulate) pathway to override the (dystonic/spastic) pyramidal output to VII -- analogous to preserved "emotional smile" symmetry in patients with hemifacial palsy. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

Surprised to discover that Thermo Fisher appears to show a fake western blot for the validation of one of their p53 antibodies. I've added a diagram to show the very similar bands. This does not appear to be one of the "published figures", but their own internal data.
This is awesome! I wish this existed when I was a resident, and I can’t wait to share it with trainees. Thank you, @MEtterMD.
(1/4) you know we like to have a good time over on micahetter.me, but we are also in the business of occasionally creating Serious Medical Educational Tools™
so with that in mind, i present a new EEG learning tool:

While some signs and symptoms help support or refute a diagnostic hypothesis, we don’t have objective tests to confirm or exclude (during life) most neurodegenerative diseases, including CTE. This makes it difficult to test treatments, beyond symptom management.
CTE cannot be diagnosed during life. Our work published today in @NatureMedicine demonstrates that most individuals meeting proposed clinical criteria do not have evidence of #CTE neuropathology at autopsy (1/5)

Richie Zhang just completed the Research Distinction Track at @IowaMed. During just 4 years of medical school, Richie published 3(!) landmark studies on the enigmatic NPS neurons. He graduates Friday, heads to Mayo for radiology residency training, and plans to become a neuroradiologist. Excited to see what comes next — congratulations, Richie!
I wonder how much longer it will be before Microsoft Word stops trying to change “ontology” to “oncology”
Almost the mirror image of the ages at which we fund scientists.
Drawing on a large-scale dataset of more than 12 million scientists, a new #SciencePolicyArticle reports that early-career scientists may be more inclined toward transformative breakthroughs, whereas seasoned researchers excel at synthesizing and extending existing knowledge. scim.ag/4wi7emp

The odds of having dementia at age 85 were close to 1 in 3 in the 80s; now they are 1 in 10.
I don’t think we have a great explanation: better cardiovascular health, diet, and education are often mentioned. Good news nonetheless.
Carnall Farrar. (2025, March 27). Dementia trends.
I still hear colleagues say “I don’t use AI.” Today, I pasted 8 years of data (from two assays) into ChatGPT, asked it for Monte Carlo analysis (100,000 subsamples, t-tests at n=2 through n=12), and had a clear result and tidy graph (and better understanding of assay robustness) in less than a minute. Not writing a single line of code myself felt… inefficient to avoid.
