I posted this just over a year ago, after the death of Dame Patricia Routledge, and it went down a storm, both with those who fondly remembered Kitty from Victoria Wood As Seen on TV and those who were meeting this wonderful character for the first time. It was terribly sad to lose someone as talented as Dame Patricia, but goodness, what a legacy she left us. Keeping Up Appearances, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads. And Kitty, of course... and that’s before you even get to the stage. She won an Olivier and a Tony and collected more honorary doctorates than you could wave a stick at. Quite right too. One of her final honours was the Freedom of the Borough of Wirral. Lovely, of course. But surely it should have been Cheadle! God bless Patricia Routledge. x

It is with profound sorrow that we bid farewell to Herbert Blomstedt. Our former Gewandhauskapellmeister & Conductor Laureate passed away today, 4 November 2026, in Gothenburg, at the age of 99. We pay tribute to his remarkable life's work with the deepest gratitude & respect.

I think the #JohnLewisChristmas ad in 20 years time should revisit this family as granny’s will is being read out. And she’s left the lot to a donkey sanctuary. Karma, you materialistic little sods.

Just had a look at the newly pedestrianised Oxford Street. The selfish and anti-social petrolheads can do one, this is the future. Might even do my Christmas shopping here this year 👍

This will be one of those changes that we look back on and wonder why on earth we didn’t do this long, long ago. Well done @SadiqKhan for pushing this through.

Liza Minnelli has outlived Flávio Bolsonaro’s revenge bid for President of Brazil. He lost to Lula, the man who defeated his father in ‘22. 🇧🇷

Well this wasn’t quite what I had in mind for my weekend in Bordeaux but I did witness this (video) which made me cackle. Light relief after running out of the city post-lunch avoiding clouds of tear gas. Right, time for a wine.

We're deeply concerned that the Shadow Culture Secretary appears to be arguing for an end to almost all public investment in arts & culture. A cut of this magnitude would be unprecedented and catastrophic. We've requested a full explanation of the numbers and a serious rethink.
We will cut the arts & culture budget by £1bn in order to fund 50,000 prison places. Keeping rapists and other dangerous offenders locked up is a priority for the @Conservatives. We will always put community safety first. @RichmoMusic If you need help understanding the numbers, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Always happy to talk you through. thetimes.com/article/77bcee1…

Anna was brilliant. RIP.
RIP Anna Picard. Very sad news of the death from cancer of an outstanding critic, writer and communicator – and a good friend of this magazine. Anna was Head of Communications and Insight and also Research and Repertoire Consultant at Opera Holland Park.

Goodness 💛 What praise this man deserves for putting on every Stockhausen opera. And now it is complete. Tonight’s MITTWOCH was a triumph, he and his company @Le_Balcon should be full of pride. Now i hope for great things for the centenary in 2028. HU!! @secherletemps
