Early nights often run into what Israeli sleep researcher Peretz Lavie called the "forbidden zone" for sleep in a 1986 study: the hours before your usual bedtime, when your body clock pushes against sleep. So going to bed early can mean lying awake through it rather than sleeping more, which fits waking up exhausted anyway.
