That's fair. And I totally get that some well-known filmmakers don't get discussed much among certain groups. (I got a film studies degree without anyone ever saying the words "Ingmar Bergman" to me.) My issue is with the weirdly confrontational attitude that nowadays often accompanies declarations of ignorance. It's this very strange (and imo ruinous) modern tendency to assume that if one hasn't heard of something/someone, then it must somehow be suspect/not good. I get it every year when I share my Top 10/20 list. A bunch of people saying "Never heard of these!" as if that's the end of the discussion. Lists/recommendations should help us discover things, not confirm our biases or congratulate us for our taste.

Loved loved Ben Lerner's Transcription. And like Parul Sehgal I too "struggled to describe the shape of this book just now". Unlike me, she persevered and came up with this beautiful, brilliant review that in itself an ode to the idea of the novel archive.is/20260406095020/ht…
Hoyeon is so good in Hope. A great physical yet balletic and nimble performance. And that intro is what our Tamil heroes dream of.

I wonder if there'll be an end to Tamil filmmakers' fascination with Tarantino. Do they ever move on?

What a deliciously corny addictive show. They really hit upon the perfect recipe. Nothing about this screams realist, its world is not even populated. Just compelling palace intrigue with great characters.

At 10:30 pm last night, reports that @odisha_police detained Dr Randall Sequeira, doctor to Adivasi communities, and Laxman Naik, leader of affected villages opposing @Vedanta_Group’s mining in Niyamgiri and Sijimali. Their whereabouts are still unknown, no access to a lawyer.
NEW | Vedanta seems to be attempting to revive its stalled Niyamgiri bauxite mining project despite the Gram Sabhas’ rejection of mining in 2013, raising concerns that the Odisha government may be using the criminal justice system to weaken tribal resistance and clear the way for corporate interests. @Ayaskant_Das reports.
