Juan Atkins has had a profound influence on me, not just through his music, but even more through his attitude and spirit.
As a Japanese person who grew up outside Japan, I went through an identity crisis in my mid-teens, and his music and philosophy helped me through it.
Coming from Detroit, he imagined a future of music that no one had ever heard before and made it a reality. His spirit taught me that I didn't have to fit into any existing mold.
That's why, for me, music has always been about so much more than just having fun. It's a part of who I am.
It feels like I've lost a part of what shaped who I am, and the sense of loss is overwhelming.

Discovering Juan atkins by a chance article in 1997 changed how I looked at music especially dance music. Realizing that people who shared my culture created genres that were largely promoted as “electronica” by white artists made me feel great pride a a black man.
