This was written back in 2006 after my closest call with a farm accident. Take your time out there and trust your intuition.
Let’s help others on the farm. What are some of your closest calls?
Stay Safe out there

Holding canola isn't free. The curve pays about $30/t to wait until May, but every month in the bin costs interest on cash you haven't collected (about $3.40/t at prime+1), plus storage. By May that's about $33/t, more than the carry.
The board isn't giving much reason to hold - the basis is another story. There is a potential basis improves as canola drops. Keep an eye out for opportunities there.

This weekend we saw a tragedy at CFB Wainwright.
As of this post, 4 soldiers have lost their lives, and 39 are in hospital. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.
I also want to recognize the first responders. The helicopter pilots, the ambulance workers, the nurses, doctors, police, and firefighters. Your work has no doubt saved lives. Thank you.
I'm asking, if you're able, that you donate blood in support of these victims. If you're unable to donate blood, I'm asking you to donate to the Support Our Troops Fund, which will help families with the cost of traveling to see their loved ones in the hospital.
Canadians come together in times of crisis, and this is one of those times. Our armed forces deserve nothing less.

Grain markets are getting destroyed - bearish.
China is exporting more - bearish
Other global production still hurting - bullish
What a time to be alive...
If every elevator is going to wait for falling number to buy grain, can we finally remove HVK as a grading factor?
“We’d call it a 2 based on appearance, but can’t buy until we get a falling number?”

Compared a couple of other slow harvest years with 26/27. Yeesh!
Interesting that 2016/17 was pretty close to average until late Sep and then literally went sideways.
Really need some warm dry days without heavy dew.

Grain should be traded basis moisture content. Wheat, for example, discounts above 14.5 and premium below 14.5. Why not?
This is something that @Grain_Canada could decree so fair trade takes place. @SaskWheat @SaskOilseeds commodity groups representing farmers should consider.

So.. I spent all day figuring out how these rising fuel costs are impacting farmers during harvest. What I found is very alarming. These rising fuel costs need to end. This is just for ONE combine. Not even trucks, grain carts, or grain drying.
Few notes:
1. I took a Class 7-8 combine and used 70L/hr as an average baseline.
2. For 2025, I used $1.10/L for bulk farm fuel. For 2026, I am using an estimate of the increase due to the cost at the pump getting up to $2.10/L today.
3. I used 8 hours of harvest a day (would be nice!) and a 30-day harvest.
4. This is an extremely variable calculation due to conditions in the field and yields.
5. Imagine if I would've ran the numbers using an X9's fuel consumption....

Asking for a friend….
Can someone at a Canadian grain company explain current wheat discounts given KC wheat is at the 5 year high vs. MPLS wheat prices?
It would seem to be via futures spreads that the world is paying more for lower quality lower protein wheat.
Usually MPLS wheat is at 60c premium to KC. Right now it’s a 50c discount

I urge everyone now after this rainfall to be careful when pulling out stuck equipment. Don’t cheap out on equipment for pulling. We had our near fatal accident month ago and I’ll never look at a stuck piece of equipment the same. Please use your heads to think. Not to stop a clevis flying through the air #Agtwitter

With this rain we had across the prairies we could see a big down grade in grades. Remember: No elevator in the history of elevators is SHY about taking discounts.

The Canadian government rolled back tariffs to help eastern Canadians. It’s time they roll back the tariffs on farm equipment parts to help out the nation’s farmers.
