Out now! A new @HimalSouthasian investigation by Erin L Thompson on how Mary Slusser, a renowned US scholar, made her name as an expert on Nepal’s cultural heritage while illicitly buying sacred artefacts and smuggling them out to the United States.
Every investigation we publish at Himal means a lot, but this one especially hits home on a personal level for me as someone who grew up in Kathmandu and has seen the empty pedestals and niches where stolen gods once stood, has seen the communities still hoping that one day their gods will come home.
This story will help bring more of them back, and will add to the ongoing global movement and battle to recover Nepal's stolen heritage.

On the morning of 25 July, the Delhi Police had cordoned off a section of Sansad Marg, to create a buffer between officers and protesters. The crowd continued to grow over the next several hours, and the protest remained peaceful.
Around 1.40 pm, some people suddenly broke through police barricades. Chaos followed, with the police responding with a lathi charge and firing at least six tear-gas shells into the crowds at Tolstoy marg and Jantar Mantar. Volunteers from the CJP warned everyone about “infiltrators” and urged protesters to remain calm.
The tension eased less than half an hour later, when news broke that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had resigned. From the stage, CJP leader Abhijit Dipke declared victory, crediting India’s youth with the success of the protests.
The Caravan spoke to several celebrating protesters, many of whom wanted the protests to continue.

Is this the legal procedure? Why is the BJP government in Pondicherry intimidating my family? This is not the character of the Pondy government. This is being done at the behest of the Union government!

So does this Supreme Court judge want @MahuaMoitra to take bullets? What kind of motormouth persons have we appointed as judges? Is this the judicial temperament we expect of constitutional court judges? This is why we need to fix judicial accountability.
The statement is condemnation worthy. Especially when you know about the dire state of affairs in Bengal. If tomorrow anything happens to Ms. Moitra, this bench led by Justice Dipankar Datta will be responsible. He should be ashamed of his conduct. In any functional democracy, such judges would’ve been compelled to resign or be impeached!

A recent NITI Aayog report said some 94,000 government schools were closed over the past decade, an average of 25 a day, contributing to a 2.26 crore decline in government school enrolment. The government schools’ share of total enrolment has fallen from 71% in 2005 to 49.24% in 2024-25.

Now that the Supreme Court has removed confusions, we expect the Government of India and all BJP/NDA-ruled states to immediately honour the assurances given on 25 July to the young of this country.
From Day 1, the Cockroach Janta Party has stood by every student and every protester, providing legal assistance, medical support, and every other form of help within our means. That commitment remains unchanged. We thank all lawyers across the country who continue to help the protesters.
We also continue to closely monitor developments across states and remain in constant dialogue with senior representatives of the Union Government. We expect the assurances to be implemented in both letter and spirit.
The youth of this country honoured their word. It is now time for the Government to honour its own immediately.

What @palkisu is saying makes sense. When algorithms become teachers, reels become textbooks , virality becomes truth, when reading disappears, it is misinformation that flourishes. An uninformed generation can be a potential national security risk.

I just spoke with Ruchika's mother. She is deeply upset and understandably angry. Despite Ruchika releasing an apology video and Prime Minister @narendramodi publicly stating that she (& others) should be forgiven, the FIR against her child has still not been withdrawn. She is also distressed that sections of the media continue to circulate her daughter's videos and relentlessly hound the family with questions.
On behalf of Cockroach Janta Party, I assured her that no legal action will be taken against her child. I also assured her that we will extend every possible legal assistance and ensure Ruchika receives any counselling and support she may need during this difficult time.
She was relieved to hear this and said she would reach out to me whenever any assistance is required.

Full sympathies with families and children of cops as no one should be made to see the suffering of their loved ones. But this isn’t an argument about whether the protesters did this or not. The idea of parading the families of injured Delhi Police officers is a dishonourable attempt to create an emotional counter-narrative and is more aimed at deflecting systemic accountability for use of force by the state and hence shifts the focus from institutional actions to individual suffering.
Comparing state-backed police force's injuries with injured students ends up creating a false moral equivalence, because the police hold state authority and crowd-control tools. Remember, violence is always a state monopoly in legal terms. Their attempts distract everyone from the core issue - of police misconduct and disproportionate use of force. In this battle of my emotion versus your emotion, the larger picture should never be lost in any civilised society.🙏
