Last week, Pennsylvania passed the “Beagle Bill” into law, making it the 18th state to establish a pathway for adoption of dogs and cats once used in experiments.

Pet cats spend their days napping & playing with family members. 💤🧶
But in labs, they live in sterile cages w/ little interaction—& most are killed after the tests end. 💔
In reproductive toxicity tests, pregnant rats are force-fed chemicals, killed along with their babies & examined for birth defects. Thousands of animals suffer, yet results often fail to predict human impacts. We're calling for a shift from rat-relevant to human-relevant research
A deer mouse starved to death at a @UofSC lab last year because careless workers failed to notice that he did not have access to food for four days. The facility has not been penalized.💔🐭

‼️ Our study found that around 382,000 fishes have been used, are currently being used or have been approved for chemical testing under the EU’s chemicals law (REACH) since 2009.
And regulatory changes could lead to 520,000 to 680,000 more fishes being used. 📈
That’s why we’re advocating for:
➡️ More funding for non-animal methods (NAMs)
➡️ NAMs to be incorporated into REACH & animal testing truly becomes a “last resort”

If animal-free methods exist, why are animals still used in testing?
The harsh truth is that we don't have an animal-free method for every single test yet. And when non-animal methods are avail, outdated regs, funding priorities & established practices can hold back their use.

WE DID IT! Yesterday, the Beagle Bill was signed into law by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro!
Pennsylvania is now the 13th state to prohibit the sale of animal-tested cosmetics and the 18th state to give dogs and cats the opportunity to be adopted after the experiments have ended.

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has unanimously passed the beagle bill, which would ban the sale of new animal-tested cosmetics and create pathways for former research dogs and cats to find homes.
“The future of science is prioritizing those non-animal alternatives,” says @humaneworldorg.
The face of the Beagle Bill, Phoebe, was one of about 4,000 beagles Humane World for Animals rescued from a Virginia breeding facility in 2022.
