“It is the destiny of souls not to grow old on earth, but to remain young.” The body grows old. The soul does not. We confuse maturity with aging. We assume that as the years pass, something within us must inevitably become heavier, harder, and less alive. But the physical body belongs to the forces of the earth. It grows, reaches its peak, declines, and returns to the soil. The soul belongs to another order of existence. It can suffer without becoming bitter. It can lose without losing its capacity for wonder. It can gain wisdom without becoming rigid. This is what it means for the soul to remain young. Youth is not a number. It is the quality of openness. Open to truth. Open to beauty. Open to other human beings. Open to the possibility that reality is greater than what we currently understand. A person can be 20 and already inwardly exhausted. Another can be 70 and possess a soul that is astonishingly fresh. The difference is the condition of consciousness. The physical organism ages. The life forces shift. The astral nature ripens through experience. But the “I” — the deepest individuality — is not simply dragged along by biology. It can awaken. It can transform. It can become increasingly free. Spiritual maturity does not mean becoming inwardly old. It means becoming deeper while remaining alive. This is why wonder matters so much. Wonder is not childishness. It is proof that the soul has not been imprisoned by what it already knows. The soul that can still look at the world and ask, “What is this really?” has preserved something essential. Modern civilization makes this difficult. Information overload, anxiety, abstraction, and constant judgment harden the soul. A person can become intellectually sophisticated while becoming spiritually rigid. Analyze more and perceive less. Consume more and experience less. Protect themselves from disappointment until they also protect themselves from beauty. The soul begins to age long before the body does. This is why art, imagination, reverence, spiritual practice, and genuine interest in the world are essential. They keep the soul moving. They prevent consciousness from becoming a closed room. What appears in childhood as spontaneous wonder can return later in life at a higher level — no longer unconsciously, but consciously. The child wonders because he does not yet know. The mature soul wonders because it realizes how much there is to know. This is why true maturity can paradoxically make a person more childlike. The wise do not necessarily become heavier. They become lighter. More compassionate. More imaginative. The highest form of development is not to avoid the experiences of life, but to pass through them without allowing them to destroy the freshness of the soul. To suffer without becoming cynical. To gain knowledge without becoming arrogant. To encounter darkness without forgetting the possibility of light. “Unless you become as little children…” means recover what childhood possesses naturally and uniting it with the consciousness of an awakened adult. What if the child you once were was closer to the truth than the adult you became?
