🧵 Transbronchial lung biopsy using a 1.1-mm cryoprobe provided higher diagnostic yield and larger, less damaged specimens compared with forceps among patients with #LungNodule, #LungTransplant, or diffuse parenchymal lung disease.

Potentially practice-changing research published in @JAMA_current and presented at #ATS2026 today: Performing transbronchial lung biopsy using cryoprobes, compared with conventional forceps, improved diagnostic yield in patients during bronchoscopy.
The study was led by Lonny Yarmus, Head of the Division of Subspecialty Medicine in @MSKCancerCenter's Department of Medicine, and Jeff Thiboutot at @HopkinsMedicine.
Key findings:
🌟 Diagnostic yield was significantly higher with cryobiopsy than with forceps (88.6% vs 78.8%).
🌟 Yield was especially improved in patients with pulmonary nodules or masses and in lung transplant evaluation.
🌟 No patients in the cryoprobe group experienced pneumothoraces requiring chest tube placement, compared with four patients in the forceps group.
These findings suggest that cryoprobe-based transbronchial biopsy may help clinicians obtain larger, higher-quality specimens and improve diagnostic accuracy in routine practice.

Congrats to the Vanderbilt team on getting this done! The bottom line is that in expert hands both robotic-assisted bronchoscopy and electromagnetic navigation have similar diagnostic yields (mid to high 70s) and complication rates.
