It has been interesting to watch San Francisco as it has been stripped of nearly all of its original countercultural garments (distrust/apathy towards The Cathedral, high-openness, suspicion of credentialism, original thought, etc.) and has donned a new zeitgeist that is the absolute antithesis of its former ethos. Everywhere you look resembles third-world, low-trust, social hierarchy jostling . "How much did you raise bro? Did you get the Sequoia check? You don't work at a Tier 1 lab? You didn't... didn't go to Stanford?". The city that was once great because of its disgust with these sorts of people has now been corrupted by them as they have min-maxed Machiavellian social dynamics to accumulate power in the valley like XP points. Power which is now completely divorced from any genuine talent, skill, or benevolence. All that matters is that you are able to Scam a16z out of $15M (@cluely) because you are a poaster and you are anointed with SF Clout™ This infestation is so deep that even those who rightfully call it out are still willful participants in the exact culture they so detest (check her bio).
made me physically disgusted reading this >literally the only reason why you care about a person you have not met is because they've done something publicly approved not only is it not true, this kind of mindset is so inhumane. sad for him but also the fact that lots of tech bros think like this to some degree. reject treating people transactionally.

This is my single most technocratic take. The President should make something like $50M a year. Senators, $1M. House members, $500k. *And* the costs of work-related travel, and of maintaining a second household in the DC area, should be fully covered for members of Congress. In exchange, ban all Congressional stock trading.
It's unpopular to say, but we now need to pay our politicians more. Take the US House. Their salaries have been frozen since 2009. In real terms, they've gone from a very respectable $300k to barely half that, $174k. That's much less than many could make in the private sector.

NERD ALERT
Unpopular opinion; No one - literally not a soul - actually enjoys the taste of beer. Not a single human. Those who claim to enjoy beer, don’t actually. It’s really just a social ritual, a form of self deception… the impact of decades of stacked marketing to convince you that beer is anything but an alcohol delivery mechanism. You can enjoy getting sloshed. You can enjoy the social liberation that alcohol offers. You can enjoy the party. But don’t act like you actually like the taste of beer. You don’t. You might think you do. But you don’t. Because it tastes like it looks: bitter dehydrated piss, with bubbles. In the case of Guinness, like diarrhea, with bubbles. And you know it.

A Wired journalist went to interview John McAfee once and described the following encounter: ‘He loads the bullet into the gleaming silver revolver, spins the cylinder. "This scares you, right?" he says. Then he puts the gun to his head. My heart rate kicks up; it takes me a second to respond. "Yeah, I'm scared," I admit. "We don't have to do this." "I know we don't," he says, the muzzle pressed against his temple. And then he pulls the trigger. Nothing happens. He pulls it three more times in rapid succession. There are only five chambers. "Reholster the gun," I demand. He keeps his eyes fixed on me and pulls the trigger a fifth time. Still nothing. With the gun still to his head, he starts pulling the trigger incessantly. "I can do this all day long," he says to the sound of the hammer clicking. "I can do this a thousand times. Ten thousand times. Nothing will ever happen. Why? Because you have missed something. You are operating on an assumption about reality that is wrong."’
> gets a job coding for NASA > builds Mcafee antivirus from his living room > hits the forbes list > becomes a suspect when his neighbor's found dead in belize after killing his 4 dogs > changes his whole look to slip out of belize with his 20 year old girlfriend > tricks the police by hiring a body double to cross the border with his passport > meanwhile he goes the opposite direction to guatemala > fakes a heart attack to dodge capture there > the hitwoman sent to kill him becomes his wife > behind snowden's leak that exposed the US surveillance state > stops paying taxes by blackmailing the gov > runs for US president (twice) > bugs Hillary Clinton's campaign staff by mailing them "free" laptops > moves to a boat in the caribbean with armed guards > most wanted in 3 different countries > judge approves his extradition to the US > found dead in a Spanish prison cell > spanish judge ruled his death a suicide > previously said if he's ever found dead it wasn't suicide > may still be alive The very definition of "You can just do things"

I feel like this might have been a universal experience as a kid growing up, but idk but when I was young I was so saddened by the fact that I could only watch YouTubers play Minecraft mods and not play them myself as it was too technical for me to install as a 7 year old, and I just remember being so like jealous. Of not being able to like play the clay soldiers mod.

Everything at work feels urgent, life threatening, etc. I wake up often at night from the stress. But if I left tomorrow I’d forget it all, the company would forget I ever existed, and within 3 months it’ll be as if I was never there

This is such a hilarious take. Pharma has spent decades inventing literal miracle drugs. It’s all they do. How’s that working out for their public perception?
Anthropic has told investors in pre-IPO meetings that it plans to lean harder into biology and healthcare applications to help mitigate the increasingly negative public sentiment against the industry. A few miracle cures would certainly do wonders to turn things around.

Alison Roman lost her NYT column in 2020 because she published Asian-fusion noodle recipes without doing the food version of a land acknowledgment.
i think when people say “woke 1 was crazy” they should be required to specify exactly what was so crazy about it because i’m getting scared 😐

I honestly don't get it. I am better-educated and make much more money than my parents. But my quality of life is worse because housing has 10x'ed since 1995. Like why is this so complicated for you people?
Much has been said about a "downwardly-mobile educated class" powering progressive candidates, and Michigan makes it about as clear as it gets.

I bet it would feel awesome to force him to eat a bowl of dog food at gunpoint
Kevin O’Leary says he wept when Rolex gave him a watch even its own staff had never seen. “Grown men weep just looking at pictures of this mystical beast. Does it exist? I got on my knees and begged for it.” “The morning before the Oscars, the phone rings. They gave me an address and said, ‘Be there.’ And there it was.” “The entire Rolex staff had never seen it. All the dealers from around LA came to see it.” “For an hour we looked at it. We didn’t touch it. We just looked at it and said, ‘It’s real.’” “I did, and I wore it. I was weeping. It was mine. I own it. Do you know how many people have that piece? Maybe nobody.”

He was only 26 years old too. That’s like if timothee chalamet had assassinated joe biden.
John Wilkes Booth was the equivalent of an A-list celebrity before he even assassinated Lincoln This is extremely bizarre to me because I had no idea

A Himalayan brown bear emerging from hibernation
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This video shows Chada, a rescued Tien Shan (Himalayan) brown bear at the White Rock Bear Sanctuary in Ukraine. The sanctuary clarified that she was waking up from a normal nap, not emerging from hibernation, and her matted fur is from shedding her winter coat. mymodernmet.com/video-bear-wak… whiterock.savewild.org/en/our_bears_e…
