Nintendo's major Switch cartridge supplier is leaving the ROM business! Taiwanese memory manufacturer Macronix, one of Nintendo's main suppliers of ROM chips for physical Switch and Switch 2 game cards, is gradually phasing out its ROM production. According to industry analyst David Gibson of MST Financial, the company will no longer develop new ROM products, and Q3 2026 will be the final quarter in which it reports ROM sales separately. The shift comes as ROM becomes a smaller part of Macronix's business: - ROM accounted for just 5% of revenue in Q3 2026, down from 26% a year earlier. -ROM sales declined 39% year over year. - Macronix is redirecting manufacturing capacity toward other memory technologies, including NOR and NAND flash and eMMC. This raises questions about the future supply chain for Nintendo's physical game cards. However, #Macronix isn't Nintendo's only supplier, so this doesn't mean physical cartridges are disappearing. Still, another major supplier stepping away from ROM production could add pressure to an already changing physical games market. #NintendoSwitch2 #PhysicalGames #GeekRealmHub
