Haven’t you ever wondered how these Chinese treasures came to be exhibited in your Louvre and Fontainebleau? This is what I took in the Chinese Museum at Fontainebleau, all looted from the Chinese Yuanmingyuan that your French ancestors burned in 1860.

Oh my God lol. A Japanese poster basically tweeted: why are there so few booze options in Korea So a Korean poster replied: Wow this gives me the same vibe as hearing a Japanese person in Chongqing (China) asking why there are so few historical sites I looked into it and the reason is because the Japanese bombed substantial parts of Chongqings historic and urban areas and in Korea Japan's colonial administration systematically disrupted the foundations of Korea's traditional alcohol culture by systemically suppressing much of household brewing which almost wiped out hundreds of regional liquor traditions 😭

If a white person born in Australia can be Australian without Aboriginal ancestry, and a white person born in America can be American without Native American ancestry, why can't a Black person born in England be English without Anglo-Saxon ancestry?

More Chinese were killed during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression than Jews were killed during the Holocaust. You wouldn't know because we don't cry about it for decades and force the whole world to cry with us.

I watched a long and difficult but worthwhile movie recently called "Silence," by Martin Scorsese. 17th-century Portuguese missionaries in Japan found themselves in an impossible predicament: renounce God, or possibly pay a greater cost. The local Tokugawa Shogunate was determined to stamp out Christianity. However, just killing the priests simply made martyrs out of them and caused more conversions. So they made the padres watch as their parishioners were tortured to death with ever-increasing creativity until they finally agreed to renounce their faith. The priests were ready to be martyred themselves but couldn't stand watching the suffering of their flock. And once the priests were broken, it was only a matter of time before faith died. How horrible, right? But then you reflect that the Japanese knew about the vast Portuguese empire of the 17th century. Christianity was a national security threat. Once people start believing in a foreign faith, how long can it be before Japan gets subverted by outsiders? The fact that the religious justification just so happens to be so useful to empires doesn’t mean it’s not sincere, though. In fact, it has to be sincere. Without the true faith of the padres, who would be inspired to believe? It occurs to me that today's human rights activists and pro-democracy NGOs are the missionary class of today's American empire. Or call it the rules-based international order, if you will. Since my own apostasy away from liberalism, I've found it almost impossible to just have a conversation with Westerners from that class. Because with them you are no longer arguing facts; you're arguing faith. They literally believe that the only political system with legitimacy is liberal democracy, and they believe it as fervently as the padres believe in Jesus. Well, I have an idea for them if they truly want to promote democracy around the world: go home and convince the American government to stop messing with other people's elections. This is the way the world works right now: the more open your society, the more free speech, right of assembly, and multi-party free and fair elections you have, the easier it is for the US government to rifle through your politics like an open box of chocolates and take what they fancy. Ever heard of NED? If not, look it up. The problem with the padres was never that their faith in Jesus was disingenuous. It's that once everybody got baptized, the conquistadors' pointy swords wouldn't be far behind.

Meanwhile on Chinese TV, they're explaining why America's economics Nobel Prizes don't add up to anything. Zhang Weiwei: every country that modernized needed a first pot of gold -- the starting capital that gets an economy growing. "The West got theirs through violence, war, the slave trade. Ruthless plunder, ruthless slaughter." China earned its own -- "through its own effort and sacrifice." US-trained economist Wen Yi adds the punchline: Western models literally can't explain where that starting capital comes from. "Economics assumes it's given -- by God." Which is why copying the Western model was never on offer for the Global South: "Tell developing nations to copy you -- no pot of gold!"

Every American should watch this movie. The Western gaze gets flipped: now China is using cinema to scrutinize our behavior. Overseas Chinese in Iraq are running a restaurant when the US invades. They meet some "American Born Chinese" in the US military. Watch what happens next.

One badly behaved Chinese tourist becomes evidence about 1.4 billion Chinese people. Fifty-two Singaporeans detained in China over a suspected pyramid-scheme operation suddenly become fifty-two individuals entitled to consular protection, due process and careful language. That is exactly the point. Individual misconduct should be treated as individual misconduct. But when the offender is Chinese, Singaporean commentary suddenly discovers collective guilt. One Chinese person behaves badly: “Chinese people have no manners.” Fifty-two Singaporeans are detained: “Please respect their rights and due process.” Fascinating how quickly civilization returns when the passport changes. Imagine needing an “inferior Chinese” so badly just to reassure yourself that you have successfully transcended being Chinese.

Eric Schmidt saying the quiet part out loud: "What I don't like about [China's AI] is that it's all open source which means it's largely uncontrolled and not controlled in any way by us." He adds, "if that makes you feel any better," that only 2 or 3 countries can be independent AI powers. In other words, it's all about hegemony: the ideal scenario is a world where AI is controlled by the US - and the fewer countries that can resist that, the better. Just so everyone is clear, the gripe here is that China is destroying the profits of the western bourgeoisie, because they are forced to make their products cheaper to compete with Chinese competitors. This is the central argument of 100% of all western economic analysis of China. The more affordable China's products, the more it destroys their monopolies and their profit margins. As always, the purpose of such propagandists, as well as their "elected" governments, is to make the interests of the bourgeoisie appear like the national interests of their respective countries. It's the first rule of bourgeois economics: What's good for the bourgeoisie is good for the proletariat.
Xi Jinping’s running of China as a government-subsidized, export-driven manufacturing juggernaut “is not just bad for whole industries around the world; it’s also distorting China’s economy and alienating trading partners,” @MichaelSchuman argues: theatlantic.com/internationa…
