Conservative plans to withdraw from Aarhus Convention come under attack in of all places, the Daily Telegraph. Aarhus is the reason we all found about about the sewage scandal! River polluters will love this. cc @Feargal_Sharkey telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/11…

I used GPT-6 Astra to break an unsolved cipher to one of Napoleon's generals that had gone unread for 217 years. What makes this impressive isn't actually the codebreaking, but that Astra completed the entire multi-modal workflow in ~6 hours from a single image and goal. 1/6🧵

The Environment Agency will take until the end of 2028 to decide whether the Wye needs a Water Protection Zone. Fish Legal calls it “outrageous”. troutandsalmon.com/news/rive…

Disappointing to hear the sound of the can being kicked down the road yet again. @FishLegal_ "Environment Agency’s Statement of Intent commits the regulator to completing a full assessment of a possible Water Protection Zone by the end of 2028." fishlegal.net/2026/09/21/fis…

. @FishLegal_ criticises the EA’s 2028 River Wye assessment deadline after a decade of legal action. That would be 13 years from the binding 2015 commitment just to decide whether to seek stronger controls. The Wye needs action now. Read more: fishlegal.net/2026/09/21/fis…

Ukraine's military goes to extreme lengths to save injured soldiers. Meanwhile, Russia's wounded-to-killed ratio is worse than during WWI. My latest in The Atlantic (gift article): theatlantic.com/internationa…

This is a truly shocking case, which I have some knowledge of. It is unbelievable what happened.
This morning I joined Heather Cornelius and Ryan Cornelius’ brother Chris at @10DowningStreet to deliver a personal letter from Ryan’s family, calling on the Government to do everything it can to secure his release from detention in the UAE. Tim Roca MP @Tim_Roca and Lord Clement-Jones joined us. Ryan Cornelius must be freed and reunited with his family. We will not stop pressing for action until he is home. @FCDOGovUK @GMJCampaign

1) Went to Petra in Jordan. If you ever wanted to go, go now. It’s the value investor opportunity of a lifetime. The place is absolutely empty. Less than 200 visitors a day, down from 5,000+ previously (down ~95%). Hotels are cheap. Food is great. Amazing guides are available and you literally get the place to yourself…

And to think they used to laugh when I told tales of the mean streets of Chiswick.
This is the London Banana. As long as you stay within the Banana, you'll have a great time in London. Almost everything outside the Banana is horrible these days, best avoid. Not clear why, or when this happened. But it is what it is.

More unbelievable idiocy with 4X4 drivers thinking its OK to drive along riverbeds. This time in Kent on the River Darent. there is a normal ford on the river but is a long way from where this happened. kentonline.co.uk/dartford/ne…

The EA tells anglers it’s an offence to harm a single eel. But where is that same urgency when huge numbers of juvenile eels are lost because they can’t reach suitable habitat? These are a critically endangered species.

A brilliant long-read account of the river sewage scandal. A complete failure of accountability and governance.
The very brilliant, tenacious, redoubtable journalist that is @gillplimmer1 of the @FT describes her decent into a sewage scandal that has rocked the nation, the making of new friends, I am honoured to be one of them and the threats, the bullying, the cajoling of the water companies all in a failed attempt to get her to stop. Fabulous, fabulous read... ft.com/content/9399b276-d8b7…

✍️ A big essay by me for The @Telegraph on the astonishing scale of Britain’s mission to build a working nuclear fusion power plant in Nottinghamshire. Most people don’t realise the scale of this, which is really our Manhattan Project - a giant national re-industrialisation effort through engineering.

Trying to onboard my parents to ChatGPT desktop app and the separation between Chat, Work, and Codex and the lack of consistency across ChatGPT web, desktop, and mobile apps is all incredibly messy. I think the team should do a clean up / quality pass or maybe ask Codex to do it. (I say all this as a Codex fan)

The Pang #chalkstream rated in poor ecological condition AGAIN. Rated poor in 2022, since then there has been no improvement. Thames Water call the Pang its “flagship” chalk stream. If this is what flagship care looks like, what hope is there for the rest? bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0km…
