With respect, this is terrible advice. You need to prove -- to yourself more so than to investors -- that intelligence is more valuable inside your product, than on top.
If tokens *aren't* worth 4X inside your product, what are you even doing? You're just reselling the labs. 1/
Christina Cacioppo on why Vanta is eating its token costs:
"If you try to charge people based on tokens, they are very quick to say, 'Oh, you've just marked up a Claude token 4X. Are you 4X as good as Claude?'
You actually put yourselves in a competitive position against the models that probably no application really wants to do.
We're eating the token cost right now. We're taking lower margin.
This is a usage phase and a deployment phase of this technology, and just go nail that, and you can figure out commercialization after."

I’ve known @kevinweil and @dpatil for nearly two decades. They’re two of the smartest people I know. So when they asked @uncorkcap to invest in their new company, we jumped at the opportunity.
Kevin and DJ, alongside Sol Reisberg and @manohar_paluri, are building something that could genuinely change millions of lives: a new approach to discovering medicines that brings together expert chemists, AI, and robotics.
Today, developing a new drug takes years and involves testing thousands of molecules, most of which don't work. And all those failed experiments contain valuable information that today's AI models largely don't have access to.
Warp is building the scientific infrastructure here in the U.S. to help researchers discover new medicines faster, with the goal of dramatically accelerating experimentation. The lab will also generate valuable experimental data to help train increasingly capable AI models.
This team could do just about anything, and they've decided to take on one of the hardest problems in science. Couldn't be more excited to be part of it!
💥 Introducing Warp Sciences, a new company applying AI and robotics to help the world develop new medicines faster.
We’ve raised a $215M Series A led by @lightspeedvp to bring frontier AI out of the browser and into the lab, and build scientific capacity here in America.
I co-founded Warp with my long-time friend @dpatil, FAIR co-founder @manohar_paluri, and drug hunter Sol Reisberg. The early team is full of incredible people like @bkspears9, who helped achieve Q>1 fusion at LLNL.

Incredibly excited to announce @uncorkcap's investment in Evos (@ai_evos), co-led alongside my good friend, @kerby at Field Ventures, as the company comes out of stealth with $9M in funding.
Logistics is one of the largest, most complex industries in the world. We've built incredible technology to track trucks and shipments, yet so much of what keeps the industry running still depends on the judgment of experienced people. And most of that knowledge lives in their heads.
@im_urav and the Evos team have built something really unique. Their autonomous AI operators learn how a business actually runs, then apply that judgment to handle operational work around the clock. Instead of telling businesses how to work, Evos learns how they work.
The early traction is extraordinary. Evos crossed $1M in ARR just four weeks after launch, and customers are already expanding how they use the platform.
I've spent years looking at logistics technology, and this is one of the first companies I've seen that could fundamentally change how these businesses operate. Urav is also just 23 years old and one of the most impressive young founders I've met. His speed and understanding of this industry are something else!
Also thrilled to be investing alongside @CrosslinkCap, @utopiacapitalco, and several angel investors.

Thrilled to share that @uncorkcap led @phinity_ai’s $5.2M seed round!
Phinity is building AI systems to design, verify and eventually tape out chips. In seven years in venture, I’ve never seen a ramp like this: $0 to eight figures in annualized run rate in under three months.
I first met @sonyashijin and @aadi_nash late last year, when Phinity was only a few months old and had no customers or revenue.
Rather than simply layering coding agents onto existing workflows, Phinity is training AI models to design chips themselves.
Since then, they've assembled an incredible team from NVIDIA, Intel, and frontier research labs. Phinity's agents have outperformed experienced hardware engineers on power, performance and area, even when those engineers were using frontier coding agents, and the system produces verified designs an order of magnitude faster.
If you're at a frontier lab or semiconductor company and want to dramatically shorten your chip design process, the Phinity team would love to chat. And if you want to work on one of the hardest technical problems out there, they're hiring!

Big congrats to the @Numeral team on their Series C! Very proud to have backed them since the seed.
@SpamRoss and Matt are some of the most impressive founders I’ve ever met. They’ve gone after a huge, mission-critical market dominated by legacy incumbents and have become the dominant next-gen player in just a few years, with 3,500+ customers across 90+ countries.
Couldn’t be more excited to invest more in this round!
Numeral has raised a $100M Series C, led by Insight Partners with participation from Salesforce Ventures, Benchmark, Mayfield, Uncork, Y Combinator, FCVC, and Geodesic.
This brings our total funding to $157M.
@numeral solves U.S. sales tax, VAT, and GST compliance for 3,500+ global businesses, trusted by companies like Supabase, Eight Sleep, and Graza.
We’re building the future of tax -- where AI agents, human expertise, and global compliance come together in one system.
Since starting the business in 2023, we’ve grown quickly across our core e-commerce and software segments, while expanding into new industries including manufacturing, distribution, and wholesale.
There is a lot of work in front of us. Sales tax is more dynamic than ever, with states like California implementing new taxes on software and more states using AI for enforcement.
We are hiring across the org from engineering to product, sales, and marketing. And we’ve just opened our new office in NYC. If you are looking for what’s next, I’d love for you to take a peek at our careers page.
Excited for the year ahead. And humbled to be working with investors like @insightpartners, @rebeccaliudoyle, @SalesforceVC, @katiessschwartz, @ZKokosa, @MayfieldFund, @SPangulur, @benchmark, @chetanp, @ycombinator, @gustaf, @uncorkcap, @susanwliu, @GeodesicCap, @arvindayyala, @FundersClub, @mittal, @mantisVC, @AlexPallNY, @ShaanVP, @lennysan, @moizali, @ringmybeller, @khency6, @asturnerr, @maariabajwa and so many others.

A few thoughts on the current state of venture capital.
When the Music Is Playing
In July 2007, a few weeks before the credit markets seized up, Chuck Prince, then the CEO of Citigroup, gave an interview to the Financial Times. The line everyone remembers is this one: "As long as the music is playing, you've got to get up and dance." He was mocked for it for years afterward, and he lost his job a few months later. But I have come to think he was saying something honest. He wasn't claiming the music would play forever. He was admitting that he couldn't sit down while it was still going, and neither could anyone else in his seat.
I've been thinking about that quote a lot lately, because right now is the most disorienting period in venture capital I can remember, and I have been doing this for a while.
Here is what makes it disorienting. It's not that things are bad. Some things are spectacular. We have companies in our portfolio growing faster than anything I have seen in my career, and I don't say that lightly. At the same time, we have companies with no revenue, no product, and a founding team you could fit in a conference room raising billions of dollars at valuations of $10 to $50 billion. Both of these things are true at once, and if you try to reason about them with the same framework you will drive yourself crazy.
Two ideas have helped me make sense of it. Neither is mine.
The first is reflexivity, which George Soros has been writing about since the 1980s. In most of life, perception follows reality: the weather is what it is, and your opinion of it changes nothing. In markets, it runs the other way too. Prices change what participants believe, and what participants believe changes the prices. The feedback loop can run for a long time, and while it's running it looks exactly like progress.
Here is how reflexivity is playing out in AI. Full disclosure: Menlo is an investor in Anthropic, so read the following with that in mind. People watched a frontier lab go from a $4 billion valuation to $18 billion, then $60 billion, then $180 billion, then $380 billion, and now something close to a trillion. They drew the obvious conclusion: that is what a neo lab looks like. So the next neo lab gets priced off that path, not off anything it has built. Then it gets marked up in a subsequent round, and the markup itself becomes the proof. Look at Thinking Machines. Look at Reflection. At that point valuation has stopped being an output of the metrics and has become the metric. Nobody is discounting cash flows. They are discounting the last round.
Soros is very clear about one thing, and it's the part people skip: you cannot know when or how a reflexive process ends. You only know that it does. Every one of them has.
The second idea is Chuck Prince's, and it explains why smart people keep dancing even when they can see the loop for what it is. As far as I can tell, there are two groups on the dance floor.
The first group got in early. Firms like ours were in some of these AI companies before the numbers got silly, and the paper gains are enormous. When you are sitting on gains like that, you start to feel like you're playing with house money. I have been around long enough to know that house money is the most dangerous kind, because you don't respect it the way you respect money you had to earn.
The second group missed the early rounds and knows it. Their LPs know it too. So they are trying to make up for lost time by writing very large checks very late, which is the one strategy almost guaranteed to turn a missed opportunity into a real loss.
House money on one side, FOMO on the other, and reflexivity feeding both. That's the whole story. Everyone has a reason to keep dancing, and the reasons are different, which is why nobody can talk anyone else off the floor.
So what do you do? The instinct in our business is to answer with company identification: just pick the right neo lab and you'll be fine. I think that's the trap. When price has become the signal, being right about the company is not enough, because you can be right about the company and still be wrong about the price by a factor of ten. The public-market investors I admire figured this out a long time ago. They spend as much time on how much to own as on what to own.
The winners in venture over the next decade will be the firms that treat portfolio composition and position sizing as seriously as they treat sourcing. How much of the fund is in companies whose valuation rests on the last round rather than on revenue? What happens to the portfolio if the reflexive loop breaks next year instead of in five? Those are not exciting questions. They are the ones that will matter.
The music will stop. It always does. Dance if you must, but know where the chairs are.

Very excited to announce @uncorkcap's investment in @epsilonhealth, which is coming out of stealth with $27.6 million in funding, led by @alley_corp and alongside our friends @ReneGadePtnrs, SemperVirens, and @jaltma.
Radiology is facing a serious capacity crisis. Demand for imaging keeps rising and there aren’t enough radiologists to keep up. Patients are waiting days for results that take minutes to interpret.
Naturally, the industry has responded with over 1,000 AI tools for radiology. But that doesn’t seem to be fixing the problem (wait times are actually longer than a decade ago!).
The Epsilon team have taken a radically different approach: instead of building another tool for radiologists, they’re building an AI-native radiology practice from the ground up.
They’re basically building what I call an Iron Man suit for radiologists. Epsilon makes each radiologist dramatically more capable without asking them to learn another tool or change the way they work.
They’re already processing 2,500+ studies a day and are on track to interpret 1% of all U.S. x-rays in their first year. Incredibly proud of the entire team and what they’re building.
More on what they’re building and why we invested in our blog.

Congratulations to our portfolio co Coder (@coderhq) and SpaceXAI/Cursor teams on this exciting integration and partnership.
The world's largest orgs still block and stall agentic rollouts - they just couldn't get the tooling through security review. Today's announcement unblocks that.
Now they can responsibly deploy the best AI tooling in a way that is safe, compliant, and secure.
Today we're announcing Coder Agent Relay: a new way to give Cursor Cloud Agents self-hosted execution environments on your infrastructure.

Ro, I like you. You know that. But you need to read the state of the state.
The number of Deca Unicorns in Cali is growing by the day as investors chase amazing startups.
A unique feature of these 10b startups is that even if they raise a billion, little, if any of that money goes to the founders, who are now worth billions of dollars over night. They are the definition of cash poor, stock rich
How are you going to tax them ? Make them borrow money against their shares, if they can? They just raised money to grow their company and a bank will come along and loan them money ? A company that has been in business maybe less than a year ? lol
Will you take their stock if they can’t ?
Do you really think each of multiple founders, who started an amazing company in Cali and is now a billionaire, can each just pull out $250m per billion of net worth from their raise ? You know they can’t.
If this passes , and it doesn’t directly impact me at all, I won’t be a cali resident, but you can bet if I’m investing in a multi billion dollar startup, I’m asking them to move from California first.
IMO, if this passes, only idiot startup founders stay in Cali.
I’ve done it before and will do it again. Dallas. Pittsburgh. Indiana. I will make NOT being in California a pre requisite for an investment
Ideology is not a strategy Ro.
The California Democratic Party and the California labor movement just stood with @BernieSanders and me in supporting 5% wealth tax on 250 California billionaires.
California voters want a Democratic Party that will stand up for the working class over the billionaire class.

When we invested in Mirai Labs (@trymirai) earlier this year, they had a long-ish term plan to offer full-stack on-device inference infrastructure and the underlying models. I thought it would take them a year...
In less than four months, their co-designed quant+inference stack for Apple Silicon shows 40–60% more tokens/sec vs llama.cpp and MLX at the same quality level.
This week they published technical posts on quantization (trymirai.com/blog/quantizati…) and sparse buffers (trymirai.com/blog/sparse-buf…) which I encourage app builders and inference consumers to read.
Awesome stuff from @Darkolorin, @dimashvets, and the Mirai team.
