Van Gogh gazed upon sunflowers and glimpsed the infinite. Róisín Murphy gazes upon a golliwog and beholds the last flickering embers of Western civilisation.
All this operatic wailing about beauty, transcendence and artistic degeneracy, only to discover she's delivering the Gettysburg Address for Robertson's Jam.
I’m going to chime in on the conversation about ugliness and degeneracy in art. The relentless nihilism and puerile fascinations in contemporary art keep sending the same message: give up, there’s no beauty, nothing to live for. I find it deeply depressing.
We seem to be elevating artists who lack the talent to achieve transcendence. Unable to produce or understand it, their work becomes a resentful rejection: “If I can’t have it, then nobody can.”
I’m tired of these mediocre deviants sucking up all the oxygen in our culture. It’s everywhere and utterly mundane. It lacks the excitement of breaking taboos because it doesn’t; it plays to permissible, even approved ideas. None of it is new, and it certainly isn’t dangerous anymore. It pays to be unoriginal and unable to access the talent that comes with ability to focus, critical thinking and sensitivity to beauty.
I know this because I lived with Simon Henwood, an artist who doggedly pursued transcendence. Early success with his giant gouache-on-paper pictures of teenagers wasn’t enough, so he taught himself to paint with oils. The painstaking process of building layer upon layer of translucent colour creates pictures of multi-dimensional space and form that simply can’t be reproduced in print, much less with AI. You need to stand in front of the painting; you may not understand why it affects you, but it will. He found such work difficult to push into the art scene because he didn’t have a story, a why, or a cynical bone in his body. He ended up as creative director for Kanye West, then Rihanna and Alicia Keys. He should have been at home in the attic working on his paintings, but he was thrown into a world of bullshit he simply could not handle, and the stress killed him.
He was an oddball, and his favourite thing as a kid was his Golliwogs. He collected all the Robertson’s Jam gollies and had a cuddly toy which was his favourite. I still have these objects. I also have a giant and very affectionate portrait of a golly that I have to hang in a shady upstairs landing, lest it be seen by visitors. A glimpse of this oil painting on one of my Instagram reels is regularly brought up as evidence of my “fascist leanings” or whatever. Even if I didn’t like the painting (I do), what am I supposed to do with it? Destroy it? The man is dead and won’t be painting anymore.
Of course a naked white woman on her knees with bruises, blood and excrement around her arse is institutionally approved and breaks no boundaries, but Simon’s happy golly with its hand hovering over its crotch is totally taboo. Taboo still exists. It’s taboo to be Christian, to be conservative; contemporary art won’t touch a great many things for fear of cancellation. So no, I don’t buy that this is brave or interesting. I know exactly what’s unacceptable in the arts. I’ve paid my own price for believing in biological reality, another huge taboo. I’m now very much an outsider myself.
I think it’s perfectly descriptive to call these people regime artists, and the regime wants degeneracy and hopelessness. Why is another question entirely, but I doubt it has to do with art.

I’ve resisted saying much about the Brand case bc it’s all straightforward and there are no real issues of law to discuss. However, I’m tired of reading the nonsense being posted on here so I just want to make a few points:

If your VERY FIRST reaction to watching a horrific Learjet crash is “That looks fake,” “It was a missile,” or “Where’s the debris?” then congratulations. You’ve just identified yourself as the perfect mark for every conspiracy grifter on the internet.
It’s the same breathtaking stupidity that gave us the 9/11 Pentagon “missile” and “missing debris” conspiracy theories.
A horrific tragedy unfolds before your eyes, and before you know a single fact, your first instinct is to invent a conspiracy. STFU & GTFO!
You’re not “just asking questions.” You’re broadcasting your ignorance, your gullibility, and your complete inability to distinguish evidence from bullshit.
And the people exploiting these tragedies know EXACTLY who you are. They know how to manipulate you, outrage you, and keep you coming back for another helping of manufactured mystery.
They turn human suffering into conspiracy content, and you eagerly spread it for them.
You think you’re exposing a cover-up. You’re actually exposing how easily you can be played.
The grifters have a product. You’re the customer.
KY is such a loser. Like in a military coup this you guy which be basically minced for lunch, day one.
The right simply doesn't recognize any election it doesn't win as legitimate. In their soggy, conspiracy addled brains, the right can't be beaten, only cheated here and everywhere. Unfortunately this is just a feature of modern politics now, and there's a whole garbage ecosystem to support it that includes media organizations and nonprofits. It's simply a fact of life now that we have to deal with this every single time an election doesn't go their way.

Elon Musk is without a doubt the most grotesque example of extreme wealth being mistaken for virtuous genius that I’ve ever seen, no contest.
A dude whose business empire has had the exceptional luxury of upwards of $38 BILLlON in government contracts, loans, subsidies, and tax credits that lectures us on government waste, fraud, and abuse.
He takes a literal fucking chainsaw to government aid, while hundreds of thousands die from the lack of access, and simultaneously engorges himself at the public pig trough of endless money.
He then takes the grift cash to buy elections, outright rig them, gains extraordinary access to the backrooms and convinces panting sycophants that he’s “fighting the establishment.”
He IS the establishment.
Years and years of missed deadlines, self driving promises just around the corner. Spectacular theatrical marketing presentations presented as new technology, with an army of ball riding zombies to explain why his latest failure is actually evidence of 5D chess wizardry.
All in line to be the friend he doesn’t have.
He was emailing Epstein to find about the “wildest parties” on child rape island, and you people still clamber.
Speaking of mouth breathing followers, the cult surrounding him is even more disturbingly dangerous.
Every glaring contradiction becomes an insult worthy misunderstanding.
Every dumb comment is a masterpiece. Every legitimate totally fair criticism becomes proof that the questioner is stupid, jealous, or secretly working against humanity itself.
It’s so blatantly a cult.
At what point does this bizarre admiration become deliberately and completely giving up independent thought?
You can acknowledge the success of his companies and the remarkable engineering feats without cosplaying that he’s some infallible prophet.
And give his employees some credit.
He’s a trillionaire with huge political influence, a pretty pathetic appetite for public attention indicative of someone that’s insecure, and a documented history of promise after promise that he doesn’t deliver on.
Please, don’t confuse money with intelligence.
They rarely go hand in hand.
Also, realize that proximity to great power is not synonymous with moral authority. The truth is historically the opposite.
And for fucks sake, stop worshipping people who wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire.

The naysayers are getting embarrassing. Every day, people are using AI to make incredible breakthroughs and answer some of the toughest questions around, like "what do I like about my child?"

People have every right to scrutinise Owen’s piece in Zeteo. But it’s curious that instead of doing that by engaging with the substance of the work, all he’s receiving is abuse, ad hominems and sneering.

The report on antisemitism in schools provides a fascinating study in the parallel universes independent and mainstream media occupy.
Indie media has done it's job, scrutinised the report and highlighted its glaring inadequacies. The entire mainstream has simply reported it uncritically. /1
The Bell report finds that anti-Jewish attitudes are "less prevalent", while "anti-Israel sentiments are more prevalent" More here ⤵️

Perhaps the most stark and revealing (accidental?) admission in the David Bell 'antisemitism in UK schools report. Antisemitic attitudes aren't increasing, only anti-Israel ones are. That's what most of this is about.

“For what it's worth, it seems like one of the main reasons the economy has still been fairly agnostic to 'AI efficiency improvements' is because most jobs are fake anyways. People are not becoming 'More Efficient With AI™' because there was never anything for them to make more efficient in the first place (other than maybe looking busy).
To what extent does AI force society to confront how much economic activity was never particularly productive in the first place?”
I'm quite worried about the future we are inevitably heading towards where the threshold for economic utility rises above what ~99% of the human population can meet. Contrasting Dario and Sam on this issue wrt AI is so funny to watch.
Dario is a hyper-autist who, for all his faults, I think genuinely speaks his mind. He sees the tsunami coming. Software engineering may very well be gone in the next few years along with many other computer-facing careers (of course assuming one is running an actual company and not a UBI corporation, which most of Big Tech actually is).
He is trying to warn the normies that this is something that is actually coming, and all the screaming and crying about AI and datacenters will at this point only temporarily delay the inevitable. It is easy to dunk on Dario for peddling this doomerism, but can anyone refute his actual worry?
Sam, on the other hand, is hyper-Machiavellian. He has the social intelligence to recognize that telling the normies AI is gonna take all their jobs (whether it actually will or not) is bad for his company. So he has to preach this blatant lie that he clearly doesn't believe that 'AI is gonna create more jobs'. Yeah no it won't (with the exception of human data harvesters).
For what it's worth, it seems like one of the main reasons the economy has still been fairly agnostic to 'AI efficiency improvements' is because most jobs are fake anyways. People are not becoming 'More Efficient With AI™' because there was never anything for them to make more efficient in the first place (other than maybe looking busy).

So what happens if we become more honest with ourselves about the actual utility of most jobs, especially when a computer can do them extremely easily and cheaply? What happens when 99%+ of the human population has little to no economic utility?
I think this social/cultural revolution (downstream of the AI revolution) is affecting young people most of all. I know kids who graduated from HYPSM+ who literally cannot get a job. Look at any honest news article and *minimum* 50% of new college grads are un/underemployed. I think this is a sign of things to come and how we respond to millions of people having less economic utility than the computer will likely become the defining challenge of our generation.
