Perhaps the most important story from the Anthropic S-1 is the company's concession that it isn't really independent, but is basically a joint venture of Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.

After seven years, Laika is back with their new film featuring two kids rescuing a baby from a dark, magical forest outside of Portland. The film is one of the most stunningly crafted animated films I have ever seen. Anyway, here's my review of Wildwood. Link in the post below.

the negative case against AI gets stronger every day; even Altman admits the problems are very serious with no obvious solution.
the positive case, meanwhile, looks weaker every day. a quote from Apollo’s Torsten Slok:
“Despite massive investments and widespread hype around artificial intelligence, the technology has delivered zero financial payoff to corporate America outside of tech. Revenue per worker is… flat for the S&P 493…. Profit margins are… flat for the S&P 493…. No signs of AI boosting [measured] productivity growth…. Mainstream corporate America is pulling back and starting to view token spending… as a cost center…. Mainstream corporate America does not need the latest model and is unwilling to pay for it. As long as agentic AI and token spending are confined to a small part of the economy, the macroeconomic effects of AI will be very limited.”

1/ WHAT AN INSANE AND SCARY week in security. It's only going to get worse.
Here's what happened in the last 7 days. If you write code for a living, a lot of this hits close to home. 🧵
2/ LiteLLM got hit by a supply chain attack.
Version 1.107.0 on PyPI and Docker shipped a credential stealer and a backdoor. The likely cause? Stolen GitHub CLI tokens from three engineers.
Pin to 1.106.2 and rotate your cloud and AI keys.
3/ PHP shipped emergency patches for two critical RCE flaws (PHP2Shell).
No login needed. Someone tried to exploit it 4 days before it was even public.
Upgrade to 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35.
4/ GitLab has a CVSS 10.0 flaw.
Unauthenticated code execution on self-managed instances. It affects every version back to 7.0. That's 12 years of releases.
5/ Node.js has a Brotli decoder bug that could allow remote code execution.
Fixed in 22.23.4, 24.22.1 and 26.12.1. Still on Node 20? No fix is coming. It's end of life.
6/ AI coding tools are a target now too.
OpenCode had a flaw that let a malicious MCP server run code on your machine during sign-in (Windows and WSL). Update to 1.18.33.
Be careful which MCP servers you connect to.
7/ Secrets are leaking everywhere.
Railway says an intruder may have read customer environment variables. Meta had GitHub repos accessed with stolen employee credentials.
If your secrets live on a platform, plan for the day you have to rotate them.
8/ Zero-days in the tools meant to keep us safe.
BeyondTrust Remote Support was exploited for weeks before anyone knew. Ivanti Connect Secure is being chained into root access. Both are on CISA's exploited list.
9/ And it's not just software.
Attackers heated supermarket fridges in France to 50°C. Some hardware wallets bought through resellers had implants that steal seed phrases. SafePay ransomware has hit 600+ orgs and wipes backups.
10/ Why do I think it gets worse?
Researchers used a public AI model to build a full Chrome exploit in 6 days. Attackers are using AI agents to break into companies at scale.
Finding bugs is getting cheap. Patching is not.
11/ What you can do this week:
• Update PHP, Node and GitLab
• Pin your dependencies
• Rotate tokens you haven't touched in a while
• Turn on 2FA everywhere, especially GitHub
• Review the MCP servers and AI tools you've installed
Stay safe out there. 🔒

AI copyright lawsuits are coming thick and fast. In just the last couple of weeks:
- USA Today & 18 other papers sued OpenAI
- around 300 authors sued Meta
- a pair of musicians sued Black Forest Labs
The Black Forest Labs one is particularly interesting - I wouldn't be surprised if much bigger music rights holders follow suit.
The pace of arrival of these lawsuits is speeding up, not slowing down.

Folks, @PeteButtigieg is right: we've been running a generation long natural experiment on minimum wages and the results are clear.
20 states have no MW to speak of.
30 do, and sometimes as high as European levels (60% of median wage).
What do we find? Sharp growth in low pay, little effect on jobs.
A Charlotte student to @PeteButtigieg on corporate abuse of the minimum wage.
How will the Democratic platform structure a wage increase to actively protect small businesses from being forced to close or cut hours?

Anthropic's proposed AI safety bill sets "killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people" as the risk threshold for blocking the release of an AI model
In contrast, when a single patient (Jesse Gelsinger) died in a gene therapy clinical trial in 1999:
- The institute that ran the trial was dissolved
- The senior scientist running the trial was banned from clinical work for 5 years
- Gene therapy saw deep cuts in funding and research activity for a decade
Tech and biotech have just profoundly different cultures of risk. As AI companies increasingly engage with biomedical research, a culture clash is inevitable

In this new age of LLMs, it feels very much like:
1. we are seeing a dramatic increase in the amount of new code being generated
2. we are not getting an even noticeable increase in the quality of software (from an end user point of view)

Investors have lost faith in the reported financials of AI companies, regulators have been bled dry, and the big four audit firms are captured. Just a “another casualty of deregulation.” Almost as if there’s a role for government in supporting the healthy functioning of markets!

Jamie Dimon says JP Morgan has financed $230 billion to shore up American supply chains. That includes financing the $125 billion NextEra-Dominion merger. In other words Dimon is lying. But what else is new?

This is a good question; I am currently working on an article on this very topic.
My general feeling is that we can't improve worker conditions by turning every consumer into a supply chain detective.
Instead, we have to empower workers to advocate for themselves. This means:
— Electing politicians who are pro-labor. The US Senate is currently reviewing The Fabric ACT, which can help garment workers by eliminating piece-rate system.
— Supporting or joining pro-labor organizations (whether unions or NGOs). These organizations help workers fight back against some of the worst abuses.
— Advocating on behalf of immigrants, as the garment industry has always been staffed by first-generation immigrants, going back to the 19th century. Garment workers shouldn't fear deportation if they report abuse.
If you find out that a company has been associated with labor abuse, it's a good idea to let them know you won't be purchasing their products. Believe it or not, companies monitor for these comments. However, meaningful change has to be structural, not through consumer advocacy alone.
Replying to @dieworkwear
How do we find out if made in the usa clothes are being done so with fair labor practices? Just bought some Rustic Dime chinos.

Anyone who saw Social Reckoning last week would have incredible doubts as to the veracity of the messages coming from Meta about suspending the key organizing account for democracy fifteen days before the elections.
This shouldn’t happen to either party. It needs accountability.
We have continued to dig into the root cause here and would like to offer an update.
Our engineering team discovered that the spike that triggered the incorrect enforcement was primarily in the account’s “reading” behavior. Specifically, our network security systems detected the use of a Claude tool reading profiles, posts, and hashtags, the rate of which sharply increased (~4x volume) in intense bursts on October 17.
These abrupt, high-volume, sequential requests in a short period resembled automated bot traffic rather than an ordinary human browsing our systems. This activity caused our automated protections to incorrectly take the No Kings Instagram account offline. An automated re-review of the removal action an hour later recognized that shouldn’t have happened and restored the account. It unfortunately took additional time for us to straighten out the situation with admin access to the IG account.
We want to reiterate our sincere apology for the error.
