Local piemaker explains how Burnham's first Budget will make things much worse:
"I don’t qualify for the business rates relief because I’m multi-site… I’ve got two shops, so I don’t qualify. The minimum wage has increased. I’m not saying we shouldn’t pay staff. I’m saying we can’t afford to pay them…
All my staff have been with us for years. So I’m going to have approximately a £700 a week increase. My suppliers are having an increase too. My supply bills are around £20,000 to £30,000 a week. That’ll go up 10%, so £2,000 to £3,000 a week. So that’s £4,000 a week I’ve got to find…
That’s about 20,000 to 30,000 pies a week. So my costs have gone up. I’ve got no business rates relief. The National Insurance is crippling me. The energy crisis is crippling me. I’m going to have to put my prices up,
Customers are going to get mad. I’m going to get less profit. As a family, as a director, I’ve got to take a 2% cut. So my family, my one-year-old girl. I’m taking a pay cut. The business is taking a pay cut.
How is that breathing room for me? Where’s my breathing space? John Healey, if you’re listening, where’s my breathing space? You promised me. You promised the UK breathing space. Where is it?"

Britain doesn’t need to go back to the divisions of Brexit.
We need to get on with fixing the problems facing our country: cutting the welfare bill, funding our defence and growing our economy.

A Chancellor having to give a special interview to walk back what he said in an earlier interview is bad enough.
To do it to make clear he has no intention of cutting the welfare bill before the next election is horrific.
No wonder he was unable to explain how he'll fund new defence spending yesterday - the very issue he resigned over as Defence Secretary.
This says everything about the values of the Labour Party - and the competence of Andy Burnham once he has to deal with substance, not vibes.
Labour are putting social security over national security, and party interest over national interest.
Budget Day yesterday was a clown show. Today has been even worse. What a shambles. nitter.cf/alexwickham/status/211…
NEW: John Healey tells @krishgm the government will NOT bring the welfare bill down during this Parliament
Chancellor says: “it's not correct to say that we're going to bring this welfare bill down in this Parliament”
But in the same interview he says the system is “broken”

Brilliant stuff from Tony Sewell in the @thetimes today. He’s absolutely right to say the people pushing reparations are political elites in these countries who want to blame Britain than fix problems in their own countries, with our useful-idiot activists over here egging them on.
If you haven’t read it, or don’t have a sub buy a copy. An essential read 👇

I admit it. @KemiBadenoch gave an impressive response to the supine Labour budget yesterday. She surgically took apart the Chancellor of the Exchequer and rightly quoted the OBR in condemning Labours fiscal indolence.
She is the only leading opposition politician speaking clearly about the terrifying borrowing nightmare and debt and interest payment scandal engulfing this country.
Kemi says that this country is about to ‘collapse’. She is wrong. The collapse has already taken place. We now have to save what we can from this Labour Titanic that seeks to drown us all.
The leader of His Majesty’s opposition is both intellectually and fiscally heads and shoulders above ‘PM’ Andy Burnham. I suspect that even the Chancellor of the Exchequer realises that.
It might be time for us all to get behind Kemi for now. 🤷🏽♂️

🚨: Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ordered Cabinet ministers to stay silent on rejoining the EU or face the prospect of resigning.
He said Cabinet collective responsibility applies and it will not be appropriate for ministers to advocate for specific options.
Burnham has previously said he supports rejoining the EU in his lifetime.
Several senior Labour figures are understood to be unhappy with the gag.
How is this democratic?
Anyone would think that we have an unelected Dictator running the Country! Oh, wait....

John Healey had a big job to do cleaning up Labour’s mess. This Budget fails to do it.
Britain is overspent, overborrowed and overtaxed. This Budget does not come close to meeting the moment.

Bridget, telling lies is a breach of the Ministerial Code.
It's well known from your time as Education Secretary (before your demotion!) that you struggle with the truth.
As the then junior minister responsible for financial services regulation, I was not even remotely a 'co-author' of the mini budget. I did not see it until the night before.
I’m flattered that my decades of real-world business experience outside Westminster trigger so many Labour MPs. It’ll be useful when the next Conservative government has to clean up your mess!
(P.S. Mortgage rates are higher now than in 2022…)

Despite the atrocious budget yesterday, the British Pound GBP is currently the strongest it has been against the Euro EUR in 18 months, since April 2025.
Which tells you how bad things must be in the EU and the Eurozone right now, if GBP is *still* getting stronger.

There is a direct link between the threat to this wonderful cathedral and the obscene calls for slavery reparations - for the money would come from the Church Commissioners who manage the Church of England’s assets and not from parish churches - as it is the @ccsforengland who pay for the cathedrals I understand. Can they confirm please?
Nottinghamshire cathedral could become first to close in Church of England’s 492 year history
Southwell Minster in Nottinghamshire faces closure as it risks running out of money for daily operations in 2027.
The dean has warned of a pretty grim financial situation with a leaking roof and neglected maintenance.
The cathedral needs £20 million for repairs but was denied funding from a government scheme.
If it closes it would be the first cathedral to shut in the Church of England’s history.
The Church has also committed £100 million to a slavery reparations fund and allocated £190 million towards its net zero targets.
Critics say these projects are contributing to financial problems across the Church while cathedrals struggle.
This Budget ignored all of Britain’s biggest problems bit.ly/4e6JEBB
