I just went back and read Ben Brantley's mirthless, joyless, witless review of Daniel Radcliffe's delightful 'How to Succeed' and marvel that for 20 yrs Bway lived and died at the depressive whim of this anhedonic drip. nb: his meh take on the wonderful 'Something Rotten.'

1/ One great Patrick Stewart anecdote from his memoir: He was cast in David Lynch's DUNE, in which he gave a commanding performance. Uncharacteristically, Lynch was cold and weird toward him and the shoot was torture because Lynch was so odd...
2/ turned out that Lynch had literally cast him because he had seen him in old man makeup backstage at an RSC production of Henry IV Part 2 a year earlier and liked the way he looked. But Stewart showed up hale and hearty and bald. That's not what Lynch wanted.
Patrick Stewart brought a new level of performance to science fiction with his peerless performance as Jean-Luc Picard. He was also a genius on stage--I saw his Christmas Carol and two Pinter plays I disliked but for him. And he wrote a remarkable memoir. What a loss.
I think people should calm any expectations about Dune 3. Dunes 1 & 2 were faithful adaptations of a great pop work. If 3 is based on Dune Messiah, that could be bad, because it's not very good. And if it's its own thing, that could be bad, the way any original movie can be bad.
The three most sheerly enjoyable performances on TV over the past couple of months: Kyle Chandler in LANTERNS, Pierce Brosnan in MOBLAND, and -- especially -- James Spader, who is making something ambrosial out of VISIONQUEST.
ah, yes, "walking-around money"—the voter bribe which Ed Rollins notoriously said he'd used to secure Christie Todd Whitman's victory in a NJ governor's face--a revelation that ended his consultant career. But as Eitan says, the claim here is the money came from outside Israel.

Thanks for showing your illiteracy. You seem not to know the meaning of the word “aplomb” and therefore I disqualify you as a critic and assign you to Rudimentary English Vocabulary 101.
Ten years later, @NRO is as Never-Trump as it was in 2016, just more vapid.
This piece is earning great aplomb from the clapping seals of American decline—from Kinzinger to Kristol—because each link directs to things Trump has said or done. The ‘atta boys’ are for being a ‘principled conservative.’
But this banal politics of ‘what if the shoe was on the other foot?’ is not principle. It is anti-conservative because it is an ideology—some species of liberal proceduralism—dressed in conservative drag. It’s politics without politics. It has no conception of ends and goods.
Behold, the beautiful loser, here to ‘um ackshually’ you to death.
Hey Netflix--Pride and Prejudice is the original romantic comedy. It's one of the funniest books ever written. It's not a bucolic tale of female angst. What is the matter with you people?

I'm watching EYES WIDE SHUT, which I thought was awful back in 1999. I keep hearing movie podcasters talk about how it's a masterpiece. Guess what? It's fucking AWFUL.
I can't believe you actually used the phrase "as a Jew." That's the equivalent of saying "some of my best friends are black." It's the line that exposes the speaker.
I saw her in COMPANY when I was 10. I listened the grooves off the album. I was on Judith Regan's Fox show with her when I was 37. She expressed disgust at Bill Clinton's treatment of women. "I'm just a nice Jewish girl from Texas," she said. Baruch dayan emet.
