Lots of people slamming the Chancellor for this. Personally, I think it was probably the best thing he did on Budget Day.
It’s not just a random drink for him after delivering a budget (however bad it was). Large numbers of officials will have gone to the boozer after the budget as well, so only right he shows his face.

Saying you are not-white so cannot be racist whilst transparently being a racist still make you a racist. That the term has been thrown around a lot doesn’t stop real racism being racism. Saying you’ve always been anti-racist is not a mic drop defence when you are being a racist.

UK data regulation costs British tech businesses an estimated £5.3 billion a year in compliance alone.
That’s from new research by Freshwater Strategy for CCIA, surveying 113 data-intensive tech businesses. Two-thirds (69%) say compliance costs have risen over the past 5-10 years, while none say they have fallen.
But compliance is only one slice of the ultimate cost to the British economy:
- Half (52%) reported not undertaking a business activity due to data regulation
- Firms are scaling back analytics, delaying products and holding back AI features
- Some are launching new products, including AI agents, offshore to avoid red tape
‘The issue is that business are very frightened of falling into the trap of breaching regulations, so they do not pursue a project because of the risk,’ explained one respondent. ‘Overzealous regulation means that taking that route is simply not worth the risk capital to get the feature up and running – better to place bets elsewhere,’ said another.
62% say uncertainty about enforcement matters more than the rules themselves, while 68% say the risk of getting it wrong is out of proportion to the actual risk to individuals.
The ICO’s newly appointed independent board has an opportunity to shift culture, not just the letterhead.

I'm a Reformer not a Conservative and I'm not Kemi's biggest fan, but is wholly wrong to refer to her as an 'anchor baby'. Reformers in my personal view should not do it and it is not factually right any way.
Here are the facts. 👇
Kemi was born in the UK to married Nigerian parents - one a doctor, one a professor and lecturer in physiology. Neither of her parents ever applied for British citizenship.
Kemi moved to Nigeria as an infant with her parents. She decided to come to live in the UK amidst sharp political and economic turmoil in Nigeria at around the age of 16.
The term 'anchor baby' is generally viewed as derogstory in nature and refers specifically to the idea that the child born in the UK (or any other country) to foreign national parents acts as an "anchor" securing the parents' ability to remain in the country, under an operating assumption that the child's citizenship by birth will eventually allow the family to obtain legal permanent residency or prevent deportation.
This was never the case with Kemi's parents who returned to Nigeria of their own volition to continue their careers. They never sought to gain British citizenship and never moved back to the UK after their daughter returned.
Ah. Static partial equilibrium reasoning: prices are set by supply & demand, and entrepreneurship is free.
Sorry, but future supply is a function of expected after-tax returns.
Tax what looks like pure economic rent in a static snapshot and you’re blunting the signal provided by a return on earlier capital commitments & correct foresight under uncertainty.
Yes, over time that does show up as higher prices or less for consumers.
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply.
Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply.
Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents.

If our Rolls-Royce civil service is so profoundly broken that even Darren Jones wants to upend it, the problem must be worse than we all thought
🚨 Darren Jones: officials repeatedly told me I couldn’t act ‘because of the constitution’
The former chief secretary to the PM told PACAC:
- “I would often reply with, ‘The constitution’s unwritten. So if I decide to do something, it changes. Therefore, why can’t I do it?’”
- He tried to “abolish the Cabinet Office three times”
- He was not “allowed to abolish the Cabinet Office”

Much punchier accusations from Sir Malcolm Rifkind - a former defence and foreign secretary:
"I choose my words very carefully. I think this week Donald Trump has shown himself as a person to be repulsive; as a President of the United States to be a disgrace to his own people as well as to his international responsibilities.
"We all know his actual reasons for this are a grubby attempt to win a few more votes in the midterms by trying to get oil prices down.
"In order to achieve that, he has not only betrayed Ukraine in the middle of a war, fighting for its very existence, but he is also directly - not indirectly - directly responsible for the deaths of many Ukrainians who will not now be protected by the attempts that have been successfully made using intelligence provided indirectly by the United States."

We call on France to exercise restraint when dispersing the freedom fighters on the streets of Paris. These brave warriors for justice must receive immediate humanitarian aid, and their safety must be guaranteed in accordance with international law. Failure to comply will leave us no choice but to bring a case before the ICJ, in close cooperation with that renowned champion of human rights, Afghanistan.

Five years on from the murder of Sir David Amess, his family still deserves answers.
Only a judge-led public inquiry can uncover the full truth about the failures that preceded his murder.
We owe David & his family nothing less.

For the last 14 years I listened to people calling me guilty. For the last year I listened to people saying I was not exonerated and we won on a technicality. Well Friday changed that. The case in law we were subjected to was so egregious it could not even withstand a guilty plea

Andy Burnham should appoint inquiry (tricky as he was briefly Treasury minister). Much of worst Libor rigging - far worse than those convicted - was by Bank of England (with Treasury & No 10 urging) during 2008 financial crisis. We need to hear from PM at time,
Gordon Brown.

Now do financial regulators...
We Conservatives will abolish Natural England and the Environment Agency.
Far too much taxpayers’ money is being wasted on dysfunctional quangos that deliver poor results.
Natural England stopped 160,000 homes from being built through nutrient neutrality regulations, yet imposed a £700 million ‘fish disco’ at Hinkley Point C that will save just one salmon every 12 years…
The Environment Agency has been able to step back from its flood prevention work despite continuing to receive taxpayers’ money to carry it out.
Madness!
We Conservatives will abolish them because of their track record of red tape, waste and dysfunction.
