Delhi has the scale. Mumbai has the capital. Bengaluru has the cash flow. But India’s highest per-household spenders aren’t living in any of them. 💡 One nation. Many economies inside. 🇮🇳 🏙 The PRICE–Tata 100-city report, The Many Urban Indias, reveals how fragmented the urban growth story really is: 1. Earnings vs. Wealth Concentration: * Bengaluru leads average household earnings at ₹28.3L/year (1.7x Kolkata’s ₹16.8L). * Mumbai dominates wealth density: 26.1% of households earn >₹36L/year (vs. just 8.0% in Bengaluru). * Hyderabad anchors the middle class, with 68.1% in the ₹6L–₹36L bracket. 2. Mega-Scale vs. Tier-2 Velocity: * Delhi-NCR rules aggregate volume with an ₹11.2L Cr consumption market—nearly matching Mumbai (₹6.4L Cr) + Bengaluru (₹5.5L Cr) combined. * But per-household consumption flips the script: * Chandigarh: ₹19.2L * Thiruvananthapuram: ₹17.6L * Vadodara: ₹17.5L (vs. Bengaluru at ₹15.1L & Mumbai at ₹13.7L). 3. Spending Baskets & Geography * Big Six split: 70.1% Non-Food | 29.9% Food. * North vs. South: Northern metros allocate heavily to housing & education; Southern metros spend significantly more on healthcare. * Delhi’s transport spend alone (₹2.9L Cr) exceeds Pune’s entire consumption economy (₹2.5L Cr). 4. Balance Sheets: Surplus vs. Leverage: * Bengaluru saves the most in both share and volume: 45.9% (₹13.0L/year). * Chennai holds the highest debt-to-income ratio (27.7%, avg debt ₹5.3L), driven by housing and auto asset creation rather than financial distress. * Hyderabad carries the lowest debt ratio at 14.0% (₹3.0L). The Bottom Line: * Delhi-NCR = Volume & Scale. * Mumbai = Deep Capital & HNI Density. * Bengaluru = Cash Flow & High Savings. * Chandigarh / Vadodara = Peak Discretionary Velocity. Income is only one marker, market depth is defined by how capital is deployed. Data & Insights via @TataCompanies and PRICE (People Research on India’s Consumer Economy). How bad was life before modern science, technology, and economic growth? Awful. The example I will use in class this Wednesday is Henry Clay (1777-1852). He was one of the most powerful men of his time in the U.S., not just among the elite but among the elite of the elite: Speaker of the House, Secretary of State, Senator, and three-time presidential candidate. He was also rich and a large slaveholder. The U.S. was among the richest countries in the world (perhaps only behind Great Britain) and among the most technologically advanced. And we are not talking about the early Middle Ages, but about the first half of the 19th century. Given the constraints of his time, he had nearly everything within reach. Clay and his wife, Lucretia (both in the photograph), had eleven children: six daughters and five sons. He buried all six daughters. By 1835, all were dead: two as infants, two as children, two as young mothers. He also buried a son in a war his father had opposed. Another son, Theodore, fractured his skull as a child, but since nobody could treat him, he spent decades in an asylum in Lexington. Think about this for a second: seven children dead and one handicapped out of eleven, in the first half of the 19th century, among the elite of the elite, in one of the richest and most advanced places on the planet. And I was angry yesterday because my cell phone coverage in Toddington (England) was poor.

Why usually Governments are inefficient? Watch for the answer
Milton Friedman on 4 ways to spend money: 1) Your money on yourself (you’re careful about both cost and quality) 2) Your money on others (you care about cost, less about quality) 3) Someone else’s money on yourself (you care about quality, not cost) 4) Someone else’s money on others (you care about neither) The last one is how government spending works.

Just imagine approaching VCs with this pitch deck which says-basically we developed the internet… @GabbbarSingh @sanjeevsanyal
Replying to @JeffDean
We created a pitch deck to tell a handful of VC firms about us and what we were up to (a fun experience!). Here’s a few slides about our background and some of the things we’ve worked on from the pitch deck (it was fun putting together the list of people in our teams who have gone on to found a whole range of exciting companies). We are delighted to have selected @radicalvcfund and @khoslaventures to lead our initial funding round, along with participation from @lightspeedvp, @kleinerperkins, Doerr Capital (@johndoerr), and Alphabet (@Google). We’ll be working with them to close our seed round over the next few weeks.
