On May 7th, a mere eight days after the Supreme Court hollowed out the remnants of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, Tennessee Republicans eliminated the state’s only Black-majority district. Suddenly, Justin J. Pearson, the 31-year-old Black activist running for Congress in the district, had to take a campaign geared for urban enclaves to the countryside. “There was maybe a two-minute opportunity to grieve what we had lost. It felt very quick,” Pearson said. “They can try to rig the maps, but maps do not vote. People do.
