Crypto has a reputation for being all about money. And looking at my feed lately, it's getting harder and harder to disagree. Weren't we supposed to be building decentralised solutions that give power back to people? We're in a very US-heavy space, yet I barely see serious conversations about the erosion of democracy under Trump, the upcoming midterms, or what's happening in Brazil, Georgia, Israel. Or even the recent victory of the student-led movement in Serbia, the protests against the rising cost of living happening around the world. Never mind the longer-term consequences of all this. It feels like people avoid political, cultural and sociological discussions at all costs. But shouldn't we be doing the exact opposite? This isn't about left versus right, or allegiance to any political ideology. This is about centralisation versus decentralisation. About who controls our money, our data, our tools, and ultimately our lives. Meanwhile, democratic institutions are losing legitimacy, authoritarianism is on the rise, economic systems are under strain, and communities are increasingly fragmented. 74% of the world's population now lives under autocratic regimes. At the same time, we're becoming increasingly dependent on social media and AI tools controlled by a handful of global players, collecting unprecedented amounts of data about our lives, while data breaches expose more of it at a scale and speed that's hard to comprehend. Power is becoming more concentrated, while people are losing control over their own lives. And yet, somehow, the conversation keeps coming back to money. We set out to beat the system at its own game. Instead, we got seduced by it. Our movement got hijacked. Greed is real. I find that genuinely depressing and infuriating. Call me naive, but I'm still here for building. For building parallel institutions and solutions that are open, censorship-resistant, and difficult to capture. I'd love to see more conversations about what we're building, why it matters, and the problems we're trying to solve, rather than how much money we can make from it. I personally want to commit to that. Who is leading the way here? Who is still building today? Where is the hope?

In the series of things crypto doesn't talk about enough: RIP Novaya Gazeta. After years of arrests, raids, arrests and bypassing online blocks, Russia's last independent newspaper is no more. If only we had censorship-resistant ways to fund and share independent journalism.
Vladimir Putin has shut down Russia’s last independent newspaper. The Russian president has ordered the closure of Novaya Gazeta after 33 years. It had previously been placed on a state enemies list. The newspaper, which is known for its critical coverage of Russian political and social affairs, has been classed as a “foreign agent” by Moscow. 🔗 telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2…

Logos is on of the few things in crypto i feel truly aligned with, good people doing good things. Authentically trying to move the needle for regular people in need.
Medical bills paid so 2 families could go home in Benin. A clean up didn't ask permission in Ibadan. Logos Testnet tokens mined on your own hardware. A savings coop's books moving onto Logos Blockchain in Kampala. Local Area Network 02 is out now ↓

Ethereum wonders why young people aren't coming. But what are we offering them? The same world of domination: celebrities to worship, leaders to follow, rewards to compete for. crypto promised an escape from this culture. Instead, it reproduced it.
The real reason crypto feels pessimistic these days is because everyone is getting older and not enough young people are coming to replace them. This should be fixed with more efforts targeting young people jaded by the current world, and trust me, there are many. Give them an outlet to: > program value > build community and meet people from around the world > try creative fundraisers to co-own things with an internet community > push a movement for freedom > be a decentralizing force to centralizing ai > fight for privacy The largest problem remains the boomerification of the industry. It feels less dreamy because of it.

Congratulations to the people of Brazil. In times when the global picture looks increasingly bleak, today feels like a win for democracy. Despite next-level psyops, people rose up, shared tricks to outsmart the algorithm, and made their voices heard. There's hope.

Reading through @Logos_network zine, I came across samizdat. Back where I come from, this was the best kept secret you would share only with those you trusted unconditionally. Being busted with a samizdat could mean ruined life. 1/3

I want to share what happened to me, because I'm still in shock and I want to prevent from happening to others. Two weeks ago, an old friend reached out to catch up through @telegram I said yes. I've been job hunting, I miss my professional friends, and honestly, hearing from someone I hadn't talked to in a while felt good. We got on a video call. My mic glitched partway through, so I installed the update it asked for. I didn't think twice. It was my friend's face. My friend's voice. The conversation was normal. Nothing about it felt wrong. That update was malware. I was temporarily trading on a hot wallet @MetaMask . (I know, idiot move). While we talked, it was quietly draining everything I owned. 1.7 BTC. 10 ETH. Around $180,000. Gone before I even knew to be afraid. That money wasn't just numbers to me. It was five years of discipline, of saying no to things so I could say yes to my future. It was the down payment on a house. It was the freedom to retire early, or at least feel some sense of security. I used to tell people I was financially independent. I was proud of that. It was proof I could take care of myself. Now I open my wallet and see zero, and I feel something I've never let myself feel before: helpless. Defeated. Destitute. I'm unemployed right now too, actively interviewing, trying to hold it together while I process losing my savings and rebuild a career at the same time. Some days I feel stupid for trusting someone I've known for years. Most days I just feel numb, replaying what happened over and over. I'm sharing this publicly for another reason too. This wasn't a random phishing email or an obvious scam. It was a deepfake, real-time, on a video call, with a face and voice I'd known for years. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone, and I don't want the embarrassment of admitting that to stop me from warning other people. If a "friend" ever asks you to install something mid-call, especially anything framed as fixing audio or video, stop and verify through a separate channel first, a text, a call to a number you already had, another social media platform, anything outside that same conversation. Don't do it in the moment, no matter how real it looks or sounds. Now, here’s the hard part for me. I’m not asking because I think I'm owed anything. I'm asking because I don't know what else to do, and because I know there are people out there who understand how fast something like this can happen to anyone, no matter how careful you think you are. If you can give anything, it matters more than you know. If you can't, please share this. Someone reading it might warn someone else, or reach someone who can help. Thank you for reading this far. Thank you for however you're able to show up for me. And please reach out to me if you’re able to help.

A concept you should know about: * Polyrenewal, wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Polyr… = the antidote to Polycrisis: "the simultaneous emergence of multiple, interconnected practices that regenerate ecological, social, economic and democratic life." Petra Kuenkel explains: "The concept of polycrisis, developed by complexity thinkers Edgar Morin and Anne-Brigitte Kern in Terre-Patrie (1993), captures this entanglement: multiple crises interact and amplify one another, creating dynamics that cannot be understood or addressed in isolation. We have sophisticated language for systemic breakdown. We have much less language for systemic renewal. What if that matters? Regeneration tends to be different. It often happens locally and incrementally: communities creating energy cooperatives; farmers restoring degraded soils; Indigenous communities protecting ecosystems; women building cooperatives and solidarity economies; citizens experimenting with new forms of democratic participation; organisations developing collaborative leadership; communities creating systems of care beyond conventional markets. These initiatives are usually treated as separate phenomena. But from a systems perspective, an important question arises: What if they are not as separate as they appear? What if thousands of local experiments constitute emerging responses to the same underlying systemic challenges — and our difficulty in seeing this pattern is partly a problem of language? Attention follows what we can name: Language does more than describe reality. It influences what we notice, research and consider significant. A useful analogy comes from ecology. When we look at a forest, we can focus on the trees that are falling and measure their decline while missing the seedlings, roots, fungi and countless processes through which the forest continuously regenerates itself. Something similar may be occurring in human societies. Beneath the visible dynamics of systemic crisis, another layer of activity may be developing — one concerned with restoring relationships, capacities and the conditions for life. I propose calling this polyrenewal — as a working concept for this emerging systemic pattern. What is polyrenewal? By polyrenewal, I mean: the simultaneous emergence of multiple, interconnected practices that regenerate ecological, social, economic and democratic life. The poly matters. Polyrenewal does not describe a single movement, ideology or coordinated global programme. Its manifestations are diverse: feminist, ecological, Indigenous, cooperative, democratic, community-based and economic. They may use different vocabularies — care, solidarity, commons, regeneration, food sovereignty, degrowth, democracy, wellbeing, feminist economics — yet embody related principles. The proposition is not that these initiatives constitute one movement, but that they may represent different expressions of an emerging systemic pattern of renewal. This makes the concept particularly interesting in relation to polycrisis. We may be experiencing polycrisis and polyrenewal simultaneously. One describes interacting processes of breakdown in systems that have become increasingly extractive, unequal and ecologically destabilising. The other describes emerging practices that restore relationships and conditions on which collective and planetary wellbeing depend. The two processes coexist — and interact." At times it's tough to zoom out, but it's crucial, that's where there's hope. This inspiring conversation w/ @jarradhope_ from @Logos_network & @mbauwens from @P2P_Foundation can help you do just this. Some key points: - Market/state civilization is in strong decline - Multiple major historical cycles are converging - Decentralization alone does not prevent oligarchy - Crypto and physical/urban commons remain largely disconnected - The opportunity is to seed and build a cosmolocal, neotribal parallel society: locally autonomous communities connected through global networks and shared infrastructure youtu.be/VCNRNWZ059M?si=ktuq…
