Today, we remember Constable John McMenomy, who was assigned to the “B” sub-station in Kitsilano on November 1, 1913. He was called to W. 8th Avenue and Cypress Street for an emergency, when a short circuit caused an arc-style streetlamp to sputter and the “cut-out” box to flame.
The constable stood beneath the light and took hold of a rope used to raise and lower the arc lamp. He then gently shook the rope, believing this would seat the lamp and stop the short circuit. Instead, the streetlight went out, along with all the other streetlights on the block.
Sensing danger, Constable McMenomy immediately let go of the rope and warned two small boys standing nearby to move away. He then returned to the pole to attempt to turn the lights back on. He reached for the same rope, not realizing a live electrical wire had broken off the top of the pole, and was now beside him about four feet from the ground.
The black wire was almost invisible in the darkness, and the metal buttons on Constable McMenomy’s uniform met with the wire. He was electrocuted and collapsed to the ground.
Constable McMenomy died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. He was 22 years old. A former Dominion Police of Canada officer, he was with the VPD for only ten short months.
We will never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

Haley Stevens is being called a traitor, but by reversing her endorsement of Abdul El-Sayed, she is showing exactly the kind of courage moderate Democrats once cheered, writes James Kirchick. thefp.com/p/haley-stevens-ab…

🔴 This is big! @naftalibennett says he will recommend to President Herzog that @gadi_eisenkot be given the mandate to form the next government.

Wrong. Haley Stevens has shown herself to be a person of principle. She called out antisemitism and fearmongering, demanded an apology, and when El-Sayed refused, she chose to back another candidate.
I'd call it having the courage to stand by your convictions.

BREAKING: Senator Fetterman rips into Abdul El-Sayed.
“He has the worst case of little man syndrome I've ever seen. El-Sayed is going after a woman for having an opinion. His reaction demonstrates why he struggles with groups of Michigan voters.”

Trump may be the biggest reason Mark Carney is so popular.
But he's also becoming a less convincing excuse for provincial and municipal politicians who aren't delivering.
Voters seem to be saying: Ottawa can deal with Trump. Your job is to make my life better.

If you’re new to Vancouver, you might not know that fireworks and firecrackers on Halloween have been a tradition here for generations.
It’s part of our city’s culture and identity.
Some of you need to stop stripping away the things that make Vancouver unique and fun.
A great read. Beyond PMSH’s tactical brilliance, this teaser highlights his characteristic devotion to Canada and the seriousness with which his government approached the national project. It takes me right back to those days on the Hill. Can't wait to read the rest. #cdnpoli
EXCLUSIVE: How I faced down the ‘coalition coup’ — by Stephen Harper
In his new memoir, the former PM admits he thought the opposition’s 2008 gambit was a bluff. But the participation of the separatist Bloc Québécois proved to be its undoing

A classy tone to kick off this new era in British Columbia.
Congratulations to Jennifer Whiteside on being named Interim Leader of the BC NDP.
I sat across the floor from her for a long time and she is a serious person who works hard for the people she represents.
A good opposition makes for a better government, and I expect her to hold us to account while we get to work delivering what we promised British Columbians.

If Canada is serious about our best and brightest leaving for the U.S. (huge numbers did last year), we need to stop overtaxing & overspending.
An engineer who makes US-$200K would pay 53% in Ontario or BC versus 35% in Washington, 46% in Cali or 35% in Texas. Not competitive.

Admittedly, the PMO Canada- EU Summit press release was inoffensive. Canada should sell more LNG and critical minerals to Europe, and Canadians would benefit from more choices in Banking and Insurance. Erasmus is exciting for college kids, and protecting the Arctic seems sensible. So do waterbombers.
But the devil is in the details, or in this case, the Joint Statement, which lays the groundwork for Digital IDs, Carbon pricing and the insane fantasy of Net-Zero, the supremacy of the UN and the ICC and a blank check for foreign conflicts. pm.gc.ca/en/news/statements/…
But at its core, it's doublespeak. To increase Canada's sovereignty, we need to hitch our economy and legislation to the EU, whose economy is in shambles, whose politics are fracturing, and whose leaders have gotten every major policy decision of the last 10 years wrong.
It’s not hard to condemn an antisemitic ad that isn’t even yours. This is a deliberate choice.
Just when this guy started to seem normal, he shows us just who he is.
I hope Michigan makes the right choice. If decency is on the ballot, it’s Mike Rogers all day.
