Planning to start your building project?
Site your borehole at least 10 metres away from your soakaway and septic tank.
Anything closer and wastewater can seep through the soil into your water source and you end up drinking what you flushed.
Two extras most people never check. Depth matters as much as distance. A properly cased borehole draws from deep aquifers far below the contamination zone. A shallow one right next to a soakaway is a typhoid subscription.
And think about the ground slope. Water moves downhill even under the soil, so keep the borehole on the higher side of the plot and let the soakaway sit below it, never the reverse.
Plan both positions on paper before any digging starts. On a small plot, whoever digs first without planning decides where the other one suffers.

When carpenters build a wooden roof, there are two main ways to join the rafters at the very top peak. They can either measure and angle cut the rafters on the ground so they press flat against a center ridge board or they can overlap the full length boards right up on the roof, mark where they cross and saw the excess ends off flush in place.
How to waterproof a floor drain.
Water outlet penetrations represent the single highest point of failure.
Two stage target flashing and internal spigot dressing protocol for a recessed floor drain.
Never accept a flat cut hole over a roof or balcony drain, Enforce a recessed sump with a double flashed internal collar.
Waterproofing was listed as a defect in nearly 90% of inspected apartment buildings.
And itβs almost never just one mistake. Here are the 4 failure points that cause the damage:
1/ Incorrect falls: When the floor isn't sloped properly toward the drain, water has nowhere to go. It pools, sits permanently and patiently hunts for weak spots in the floor.
2/ Blocked drains + zero overflow: The primary drain clogs and because thereβs no secondary overflow built in, the water rises straight up to the door threshold and floods the interior.
3/ Failed joint membranes: The flat middle of a floor rarely leaks first. Membranes almost always fail at the high stress junctions, where they meet walls, door frames and drain flanges.
4/ Below ground hydrostatic pressure: In basements and subterranean levels, external groundwater actively pushes inward through poorly tanked retaining walls and concrete slabs.
The golden rule of waterproofing:
The fall, drain, overflow, edges and membrane must be designed and built as one single, cohesive system. If even one of those links is missing or flawed, water will find it. every single time.

Why do Nigerian painters end up sanding up to 35% of their POP or putty right off the wall onto the floor, and still end up with wavy walls when the light shines across them?
Because they try to both spread the paste on the wall and smooth it flat using the exact same small ten inch hand trowel. A short blade simply rides up and down every bump in the cement plaster underneath and leaves ridges every few inches.
This shows a faster, two step method for skimming over cement walls while the paste is still wet.
When you use one tool to put the paste on the wall (the small hand trowel) and a completely different tool to flatten it (a wide two handed skimming blade), each painter can finish twice as much wall in a day and cut down sanding dust by 80%.

Why do POP ceiling drop boxes and light troughs almost always have wavy edges and tiny cracks along the bottom corners?
Because instead of using a single folded piece, installers usually join two separate cut pieces of plasterboard together at a right angle. Cutting the board leaves the crumbly gypsum inside exposed. They then try to make the corner straight by hand using a metal corner strip and a thick layer of filler, which easily shifts, dries unevenly, and cracks over time.
Using a plunge router fitted with a 90 degree V-bit eliminatss the need for external corner beads and heavy skimming along the drop.
Why does plastering the underside of a concrete beam with thick sand and cement almost always sag or come loose?
Because when you slap a heavy layer of wet cement upside down onto smooth concrete, it's simply too heavy to stick on its own. Before the cement has a chance to dry and harden, gravity pulls it down, causing it to droop and peel away from the concrete.
When a concealed PPR joint, flexible WC connector or water heater safety valve fails while the occupants are away, the pressure pump interprets the drop in line pressure as open tap demand, continuously pumping thousands of liters of water into the structural slabs and joinery until the storage tank runs drys.

Why do handleless kitchens in often fail within the first year, either from malfunctioning push-to-open latches or rusting aluminum profiles?
Social media kitchens are built for photoshoots, most times they are not realistic.
Here are 5 trendy kitchen design features that look great on Instagram, but completely suck in real life:
1/ Push-to-Open Cabinets: They look ultra sleek in photos, but in reality, they get covered in greasy fingerprints within five minutes.
* Do this instead: Go for proper handleless cabinets with a recessed channel rail so you pull the doors and drawers open from behind instead of pushing the faces.
Why did the original archway in the first 6 seconds of this clip have to be demolished?
Because freehanding a tight radius arch with wet plaster over mesh almost always results in Irregular geometry and layered voids.
