That claim that “there’s no proof that man-made CO2harms our climate. Absolutely none”, is contradicted by multiple independent lines of physical evidence. We know several separate things: 1. CO2 traps heat. This isn’t dependent on climate models. CO2 absorbs outgoing infrared radiation at measurable wavelengths, and its greenhouse properties have been experimentally understood since the 19th century. NASA states that measured increases in greenhouse gases reduce the amount of heat escaping the Earth system. 2. We know humans are causing the increase in atmospheric CO2. Atmospheric CO2 rose from roughly 280 ppm before industrialisation to over 410 ppm by 2019. More importantly, scientists can identify where that extra carbon came from. Its changing carbon-13 and carbon-14 isotopic fingerprints are consistent with fossil-fuel carbon. NOAA also notes that atmospheric oxygen declines as fossil fuels are burned and that the oceans are absorbing carbon rather than supplying the atmospheric increase. 3. We can measure the resulting warming. The IPCC’s assessment of observations estimates human-induced warming at 0.8–1.3°C for 2010–2019 relative to 1850–1900, with a best estimate of 1.07°C. By comparison, the estimated contribution from natural solar and volcanic forcing was only around −0.1°C to +0.1°C. 4. The pattern of warming provides another fingerprint. It’s not simply that Earth happens to be getting warmer while CO2 happens to be increasing. Scientists examine changes throughout the climate system. The observed combination of atmospheric, ocean and land warming and other changes is consistent with human greenhouse forcing and cannot be explained adequately by natural variability alone. That’s why the IPCC’s conclusion isn’t “we think humans might be contributing.” It is: “Human activities, principally through emissions of greenhouse gases, have unequivocally caused global warming.” People can legitimately debate what policies we should adopt, how expensive climate mitigation should be, how rapidly emissions should fall, or the relative merits of different technologies. But “there’s absolutely no evidence that human-produced CO₂ affects the climate” isn’t a reasonable description of the scientific evidence. There is an enormous amount of it. climate.gov/news-features/cl… ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/downl…
And still ... there's no proof that man-made CO2 harms our climate. Absolutely none.

Our country has become so desensitised to this image that we have children chanting “let them drown”. This man matters exactly as much as you matter. He mattered to loved ones just as much as your family matter to you. Safe routes or barbarism. Always has been that simple.

Such a good point, elegantly put.
One of my most significant mental health improvements in the past few years came from the decision to stop driving in rush hour traffic

The particular specialty of human teenagers is doing stupid shit. Nobody is pretending that they behaved sensibly. Our transportation system should be designed in such a way that ordinary human frailty: youth, age, exhaustion, distraction, anger or grief doesn’t result in death.
I agree that TransAlt would be a more credible actor if its leaders would acknowledge that two teens joyriding on one electric Citibike, obstructing each other's view of even the most basic traffic surroundings, is incredibly unsafe and in this case deadly behavior enabled by reckless adults. But I also get why they don't. To be an activist, you can never ever ever ever give an inch. This is why I would not be a successful activist for anyone or anything.

Proud to be an RNLI volunteer. For more than 200 years, the #RNLI has saved lives at sea without judgement or preference. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t. Chief Executive Peter Sparkes puts it clearly here 👇

I have lived in a seaside town, done it a few times actually. I've heard the slap of feet hammering down the road outside my front window on cold wet nights when the sea is high and the wind is howling. I've heard the bangs on a door, and the shouts to get a shift on. People dragged out of bed in the cold of night. Running downhill as fast as they can. They then jump in a boat, and head out to sea. They don't always come back. Don't tell me these people are traitors to the country, when they do that, and more often than not, come back with souls saved and lives rescued. Team #RNLI till the day I die. Racist scum won't change that.

We're proud of the lifesaving work our volunteers do in the Channel – we make no apology for it. Those we rescue are vulnerable people in danger & distress. Each of them is someone’s father, mother, son or daughter - every life is precious. This is why we launch:

What sort of misguided muppets threaten @RNLI teams out preventing tragedy at sea? They dont check immigration status, use a colour chart to decide on who they help. They are VOLUNTEERS selflessly saving and preventing the loss of life at sea. Just upped my donations.

Ah dear, it looks like you’re believing lots of misinformation! We can’t be fined as we’re tasked by the government (HM Coastguard) to assist those in trouble in the water. Our crews aren't criminals. They are lifesavers.

We're sorry to lose your support, Cyril. Our role is to go to the aid of people in danger on the water, without prejudice or exception, just as it has always been since 1824. If there is a risk to life, we will always launch.

.@laocailarry. But these taxes are levied on motorists because they are easy to tax, not as a toll or subscription. Cigarette taxes aren't spent on smokers. Alcohol taxes aren't spent on pubs. Corporation tax isn't spent on corporations. VAT isn't spent on shoppers. Income tax isn't spent on workers.

I had assumed roads were built by the state, Peter. I had also noticed that motorists pay roughly £33bn a year in fuel duty and VED while road spending is around £13bn. Perhaps the leprechauns collect the difference.

Maybe among your chums from the Guild of Motoring Writers, but not in the real world. Clamp down on illegal electric bikes/scooters, yes, but we should be encouraging cycling, not putting up barriers to it.

"UK to warn citizens to stock up on food amid threat from climate crisis and hostile states" This is pathetic and up there with "considering banning disposable BBQs". This is trying to blame the public for their own possible plight, after a series of governments have failed to take proper action to address the climate and ecological crisis. The primary fault here, is seeing the climate crisis as just some temporary bad weather, and once it is over, we can get back to business as usual, and forget we're living in a climate and ecological emergency, which is going to get worse and worse. Stocking up on tins, is what you do, in case there is a short term TEMPORARY food shortage. Not a long term emergency, creating an unliveable world, in the words of the UN Secretary General, which is going to carry on getting worse and worse unless we stop burning fossil fuels. LET'S GET THIS CRYSTAL CLEAR, WHAT THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS IS AN OPEN PUBLIC INQUIRY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE CLIMATE AND ECOLOGICAL EMERGENCY ACTUALLY IS, AND A PROPER STRATEGY TO ADDRESS IT, PUTTING PROTECTION OF THE PUBLIC FIRST, AND NOT PROTECTING THE INTERESTS OF OLIGARCH AND BIG CORPORATIONS. There are plenty of expert assessments of the challenges we face like the @nebriefing, experts like climate scientist Professor Kevin Anderson, part of the National Emergency Briefing, who can lay out what the situation is, where we are heading, and the broad parameters of what we need to do. Instead, over decades, governments have told us they accept the science and have been formulating strategies to deal with the climate crisis. But I am familiar with the science the necessary measures, and nowhere does it say build massive Data Centres, that consume massive energy, have massive carbon emissions, consume huge volumes of water, extract more gas and oil from the North Sea, promote consumerism, expand airports, and pursue maximum economic growth. No the science tells us, we must NOT do these things, no do more of it. It seems very clear now, that all the main parties except for @TheGreenParty and their economic advisers, fundamentally misunderstand what the climate and ecological emergency, means for our societies. They claim to understand it, but as ALL their policy, is completely in the opposite direction, clearly they do not understand it. This is why we need an urgent open and public assessment of the climate and ecological emergency, to find out what is the government's understanding of this emergency, what the leading experts and science says, and why are they not heeding it, this threat, in a realistic way. theguardian.com/politics/202…
