It’s an obsession of your mind. What that means is you think of a martini, and then slowly but surely it’s the only thing you can think about. I know I’m supposed to be over here working, but I got to get another martini. And then once you take that martini, you break the membrane of sobriety. Once you do that, the obsession is gone, but the allergy of your body, which is the second part of the disease, takes over and says, ‘Oh, now we’re drinking. I’m going to make you drink as much as you did last time and more.’ You can’t stop. I could not stop unless I was locked away somewhere… Alcoholism did not care that I was on Friends. Alcoholism wants you alone, it wants you sick, and then it wants to kill you.”
