My daughter picked up my grandson with a rope burn around his neck and the daycare said he "fell on the playground." Kid's two years old. Can barely explain what happened. She signs him out, notices red marks on his neck. Teacher hands her an incident report. "He fell off the climbing structure. Just some minor scrapes." My daughter looks at the marks. They're not scrapes. They're friction burns, circular, around his throat. "This looks like a rope burn." "Oh, well, there are ropes on the structure. He probably slid down one wrong." My daughter's a nurse. She knows what she's looking at. "These marks go all the way around his neck. He didn't slide down a rope. Something was wrapped around his throat." Teacher gets flustered. Says she wasn't there when it happened, the other teacher wrote the report, she's just relaying information. My daughter asks to speak to whoever witnessed it. Director comes out. Story changes. Now it was "some kind of accident with a jump rope" on the playground. "Why does the report say he fell off a climber?" "That must've been a miscommunication...." "Show me the playground camera footage." Director's face changes. "We don't record the playground for privacy reasons." My daughter pulls out her phone, takes photos of my grandson's neck. "Either you figure out exactly what happened, or I'm calling CPS and a lawyer." Took them an hour. Finally admitted two older kids were "playing" with a jump rope and wrapped it around my grandson's neck. Teacher on duty was on her phone and didn't see it happen. My daughter pulled him that day. Filed a report with state licensing. Facility got cited for inadequate supervision. Still operating, but under probation. Accidents happen with kids. Lying about what happened makes it abuse.
